Sumo Trio, wide or narrow wings?

Hello all, what’s your opinions in the differences between wide and narrow wings for the Sumo Trio?

What’s the difference in how it works with different wings?

Obviously I know one is wider than the other haha!

Cheers Bob, we have a mixture, no sand, easy working limestone to blue clay, We’ve been using wide wings since we bought the machine in 2010. I have, let’s say... inherited the job now and was wondering which wing for which land?

We only work legs just bellow the plough pan.

Sounds good, we generally just work just below traditional plough pan for the given field. So I guess in theory I could drop the leg a smidge on the heavy with narrow wings so it would encourage drainage more?

I’ll have to have a look at the Metcalf ones, where does one get them?

I think originally the designs dictated that the wing width was relevant to the leg spacing.

A 2.5m wide machine (2.4m technically?) has 4 legs at 600mm spacing and was designed to use 8 inch wings. A 3m machine has 6 legs at 500mm spacing and was designed to use 4 inch wings. I don't know what the leg spacing is on wider machines.

I have used a 2.5m speced as above for mainly subsoiling and got on well with it. I think a 3m speced as above with 8 inch wings would probably move to much. No experience though.

Personal preference applies also I'm sure.

the wing width required is all down to how deep you are working and leg spacing and how much disturbance you require. Different soils behave in different ways and need different solutions, you probably need to get a spade out.

If you are using tungsten wings you should use ferobide to protect the bolt holes and the back of the wing. tungsten with Ferobide can increase the lifetime of plain wings by up to 15 times

I’ve changed my legs last year to these, Mdt low disturbance points and got Agriweld to make the leges for me. Very pleased with the results after trying original points and legs against the new ones.

Roughly 40ha a set this year but there was 30ha on stone. I’ve got some hardened ones on aswell to compare and the look to be lasting well but sumo is parked up at the moment as the tractor is broken down so nothing is wearing out at the moment.

Looks tidy, does the low disturbance points/wings still offer sufficient lift and cracking to aid drainage and root establishment in heavy land?
