What oil you using @Dave W ?
80/90.

This is the bondioli pto shaft that was supplied with the machine (not the one I'm using before anyone cries pto guard)

If it's chucking oil out of the breather it sounds like it's over full to me.

Can you get a side-on photo showing the oil level plugs? Checked the level? While you've got the camera can you get a photo of the name plate/model/serial no of the g/box itself.

The manual should tell you the refill quantity. What is it? Drain the old oil into a clean container - how much came out? Get a photo of it - what's the appearance and smell of the old oil? Does it look very dark/black, greyish or silvery or smell burnt (take a whiff of the fresh oil to get an idea)?

Refill with fresh oil, of the required quantity, should come up to the correct level plug (there might be two level plugs as they usually allow for top/mounting to allow for different takeoff and input rotations.

Once you've replaced the oil...

On the PTO shaft - take the black safety shroud off around the box so you can observe the yoke and gearbox input shaft. Standing well clear run the PTO up to speed. Run the machine in the yard and observe - is there anything that looks out of balance or vibrating excessively. Maintain a safe distance, but have someone in the tractor operate the side shift. Are the PTO angles ok? Is anything binding or thumping or vibrating? Needs a decently long run to see what's happening as things heat up to operating temperature. Do some topping - come back and check the shaft again. Any changes or things that don't look or sound right?

Not near topper now at other farm so won't be able to drain oil just yet, though they did phone this morning and are coming out again to look it over

@Can confirm from bill last shaft was £340 odd and come from teagle them selfs they tell me it's the strongest you can get for that machine,

Yeah first pic was in road position, I boom it out when in use.

Should of asked before does yours get hot from little work to @Victor

First thing is if it happens again and you have to foot the bill then for gods sake don't go buying new pto shafts. You'll get it repaired for £40 if it's just the UJ gone.

I can't help but wonder if there are two seperate problems here. I find it hard to believe that heat from the box can travel to the UJ and melt it in the 20 minute timeframe we're talking.
Heat doesn't transmit that well between 2 bits of metal that are just touching ie yoke and shaft

Myself and a neighbour both have this machine. On my Zetor can lift and sideshift without making the UJ 'knock', but he has to run his on a McC no more than half lifted on turns and with a long top link or it threatens to smash the UJ, so might be worth checking joint angles at full lift and shifted in/out.

Will check angles on lift, don't tend to lift it to high on turns more often I leave it down going round and round if that makes sense till I get to short work. Again it's not right up when road traveling not to say that even at that height it's still at an angle to be damaging, so will look into it.
What sort of temp does yours get @Bill

Sorry should of been clearer on the occasion it blow after 20mins, wasn't boiling hot then more fairly warm, gets real hot after 30 or so mins of work, to the extent you can't keep hand on it, by this amount of time the shaft is warm on the plastic yellow casing too after roughly 40mins it's hot. Then it might just stay hot or boil further.

Either way you've all given me some real helpful ideas to throw at them, so many many thanks for all your help and thoughts.

Will try and get some oil out tommorow and photo/smell/compaire it and see what they come back with
If I can load it I've a vid of it running up and down though wouldn't post earlier.
Thanks again all :)

Yes, it does get too hot to leave your hand on, but so does any gearbox transmitting 100 HP that I have used. Have used it on hills cutting scrub of forearm thickness without any problems.

Buy or borrow infra red thermometer and record temperature against how long machine has run. Being helpful by checking things usually will cost you, best to present facts then you can return the faulty good without muddying the waters.

Just for info here, but today i have been flailing with our 2m Orsi and the gearbox on that consistently stayed at 69/70c throughout the morning.
This was doing the grassy strips around cornfield edges.
