Telehandler test tips and advice

Morning all, so I have my teleporter test next week, I've used teleporters for years but finally getting my test, anyway I'm not feeling very comfortable with it being so soon as I've had no proper training. I was just wondering if you guys had any tips for what to do in the test, and what they look for. Also tips on how to get the pallet tines on without manualy lifting them on would be much appreciated.

What test is it? Don’t rush anything. Don’t drive with the boom up or extended out. Make exaggerated mirror and blind spot checks every time you set off or change direction. Don’t drive faster than the site speed limit. Don’t raise / lower / tilt / crowd etc while moving. Do the pre start checks before getting in the loader. Wear seat belt, don’t leave keys in the ignition. If it has legs on the front don’t forget to raise them up properly before moving off. Put hand brake on every time you stop, including while raising / lowering pallet / IBC.

Does the test HAVE to include pallets, maybe you only ever use it with a re-handling bucket ?

The absolutely most important thing to remember is that NO boom movement should take place without the handbrake being applied. Do it for your test and then forget, can you imagine buck raking, loading feeder wagon and the multitude of farm jobs with that stipulation. Very much a building site rule.

Dont call it a teleporter for a start .Dont be affriad to ask the instructor to repeat his question or instruction.If you fail it, you shouldnt really drive it after as its a competence test. Make sure all the windows are spotless and mirrors adjusted and clean. Remember your seat belt and climb out backward.

Dont know if this is still part of the test but check the machines lift capacity as they used to ask how much it can lift with different attachments,,ie it can lift 3 tns on the pallet forks but the center of gravity changes by where the load is positioned on the forks and also how far out the boom is .
The answer to this is not when theres daylight under the back tyres

That's probably my main worry about the test nobody ever taught me all the weight limits etc. Plus the fact I still haven't managed to master putting pallet tines on without manualy lifting them on yet. This is only going to end disappointingly I fear

Are you just doing a test without any training? I didn’t realise that was an option we were supposed to do course before Covid.

Last time we had one here, (Think it was booked through NFU ) the 1st bit was a training session , then they did the test.

As mentioned above very strict on stopping / handbrake on before operating boom.
You should spend 15 minutes every morning checking the machine before moving off, starting with tyre pressures

If it's a tall tele, coming out of the cab forwards and down the steps is a fail.
You have climb out of the cab backwards and down the steps.
Some testers say you can come out forwards if the cab is low to the ground, with just 1 step.
But watch out for that.

So who invented the load of testicles about no boom movement without h.b applied?
If these tests were the least bit practical, staff might take them seriously, instead of regarding it as a box tick exercise.
I would love to see the HSE approved by the book method for erecting scaffolding.

That is what the chart is for on the dash ,,lift capacity with boom in and fully extended , another question they might ask is if you change the standard pallet forks to a side shift design,what is the weight of the side shift and how much can it lift .
You have to know the attachments weight and deduct it from the max lift .
It's all very confusing.

It was many many years ago when I did my test ,,examiner turned up a 9am to find me loading wheat going like stink,,jcb 525-58 had separate levers ,came flying out the shed ,boom was already at cab height and by the time Ide lined up for the wagon ,the bucket was the right height to dump it ,,20 minutes for a tri axle wasnt bad going.
,examiner was an ex Sanderson sales manager , well one day of theory and the second on the driving part,,he says at the end of it ,,you had all passed before you started,,he admitted ,what you do on the day is only for show ,,how you drive it after is totally up to the driver .
As he said, its a pen pushing exercise to satisfy the insurance side of it .
