Carbon credits is a disgrace the whole thjng needs scrapped . Stupid idea

if it incentives or makes viable positive change then it is surely a good thing ?

offset should not be a reason to not also reduce emissions as well however I 100% agree

Why people see it as a rip off?

If there is a market for it whats the issue?

farmers clearly don’t like the idea of taking money for services they can provide ……….. unless it comes from the government as a sub cheque it seems ! No bigger “disgrace” than cashing a BPS cheque imo

i find it hard to understand why this new market is not being seen as the massive opportunity it clear is to anyone who bothers to really get their head around how it all works and the market for it

I suspect attitudes will chance when BPS is gone

12 months from now I will have my 2021 and 2022 ISO cert carbon sequester in those years either sold or sat ready to sell when I feel the price is right, anyone waiting 12 months will have none

This is not selling stored carbon, it's quantification of sequester ability of your farming system - quantify and certify it or loose it

The biggest problem with this new market is its not really being very well understood yet, the companies building these markets really need to do more to explain and educate better IMO and I don't think anyone has models yet to certify from grassland

Anyone looking at doing this should consider

Agreena (Gentle farming)
Trinity Ag
Soil Capital

there are probably others but those 3 come to mind first
So what the process to get going ?

I said this in a land agent breakfast meeting a couple months ago. At least you actually have to do and prove something to get money, not literally just own land and have a cross compliance strip next to a ditch!

Sums is up. Waiting to get involved is the wrong approach, as its a use it or lose it system, waiting to sell however, that's a different matter.
Yes, when it goes tits up, for example you’ve planted trees and Storm Eunice blows them all over, you’d better make damn sure you’re well insured for such an event because you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll come to you for the damages!

Make an account on one of the various verification platforms. Read the rules and Contract to see if you can do it or if you need to change a few things. And whether you are comfortable with those rules. For example you cannot plough.
Fill in with everything you have done for each field, it works out what you have to sell. Then after harvest you put in what actually happend. They verify with satellite and on site visits. You get ISO carbon certificates to sell

You don’t plant trees in these systems. People need to understand what’s actually on offer rather than making I’ll informed flippant statements like this!

What proof is required? I have yet to see how soil carbon sequestation can be accurately and reliably measured and demonstrated. Proving you have followed certain protocols is not proof of carbon sequestation.

I don’t make the United Nations ISO accredited rules or create the algorithms.

Yeh I get you, anything can go wrong though with anything.
Indeed it can, I was made aware of this two days ago when in conversation it was mentioned that even the NFU Mutual are going to offer insurance for a carbon sequestration underperform.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
