The little fish get bigger.
There are still even bigger fish in the pond though.

Do they? And large round bale hay is no more efficient then little square bale hay. That is why everyone still makes little bales of course
So people keep saying. The fact we've lost 52% of farmers since 1972 seems lost on some.
Maybe. There seem to be wealthy farmers in other EU countries, who make a living from a couple of goats, and half a dozen olive trees. The Mafia have done well out of it too....Is it not down to our government how the money is dished out
NoI suspect you do
I remember a time when Italians were entering land for setaside in the spring when they had a chance to see what areas had failed over winter. I believe also that they were claiming subsidy for more olives than the whole world production.Maybe. Allegedly land claimed for sfp was under the sea once???I remember a time when Italians were entering land for setaside in the spring when they had a chance to see what areas had failed over winter. I believe also that they were claiming subsidy for more olives than the whole world production.
the only way it could have helped keep the average farm smaller was to pay each farm a set amountMaybe. There seem to be wealthy farmers in other EU countries, who make a living from a couple of goats, and half a dozen olive trees. The Mafia have done well out of it too....

In logic therefore if we have not lost 52% of farmers, in fact not lost hardly any at all, then the EU must be the greatest thing since Muhammed Ali reckoned he was the greatest. The bible of Agricultural statistics is by Marks and Britton they give the 1976 total of Uk farmers as 299,000 ( we joined EEC 1st Jan 73 but there was a phase in to the CAP ) The latest info comes from the Annual June 1st returns gives the number of farmers as 294,000. I attach the information on farm workers where there has been a substantial drop in numbers although less so since we joined the EEC. The other big drop is in the number of holdings but this is mostly accounted for the fact that prior to joining the EEC we counted holdings as those over one acre today it is those over five hectares. A primary purpose of the CAP was to support farmers my verdict a pass but could have done better, only time will tell how well Brexit does, there is plenty of room for it to be much much worse.
I don't follow your thinking as the payment is nothing to do with profitable farmsStill is 1 acre in most of europe its just the english that have decided anyone with less than 5 hectares of eligible land is not fit to be classed as a farmer and not eligible for farm payments. Makes a total mockery of the system as some of the most profitable farms in the country operate on less than 5 hectares mainly in horticulture.

How? Educate me...The justification for not paying small farmers has always been your only a hobby if you have less than 5 hectares of eligible land. The fact that one of my fellow farmers market stall holders generates over 10 million off only 4 acres is besides the point and I know of many others far more profitable per acre than any grain grower.
