Mainly on tex cross and suff cross. Back to mainly texels with one Suffolk tup. Last two years we seem to be getting to many single lambs. Vaccinate for toxo and enzo. Used to have a few more mules in the flock which helped with prolifically. Probably need to do some blood tests. Any ideas?

When I had a lot of Texel x ewes they were inclined to have one lamb. They were also inclined to hang it too

Copper is an issue for fertility if you are short. We would have a very poor crop of lambs and a long drawn out lambing time without substituting it. I am aware that copper and Texel sheep are a no no but everything here gets a bolus with copper pre tipping including Texel sheep. However we are really short of it so you would need to blood test first

if i'm still farming sheep next autumn i'm going to keep a diary of weather and how feed looks...then see if it correlates to lambing numbers on specific days

i had a low lambing % til i got on top of haemonchus BTW

Food for thought. Do people find flushing increases treble numbers too.
Depending on how fit your ewes get you may need to run them on some bare ish or rough going pre flushing. Sometimes just leaving them fit will still twin them well depending on when you loose the tups but if it’s late they can have gone off the boil before you’ve started

Think you are right. We thought it used to do some good but not convinced now. Bolusing is probably the way to go. What about tups? How big a difference does the male line make.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
