Trees showing signs of autumn!

Despite all the rain we had from sept till April I've had to water newly planted fruit trees and even well established apple, they are heavy in fruit though
Been very dry here recently but then it is summer

We've had very little rain in June and July (so far) either... but that isn't the issue. It is not warm (typical July temps). Only the odd day is brilliant sunshine and heat - the rest are very overcast (so dull) and cool. It feels more like mid/late September than mid July and this has been going on for a few weeks.

Despite day length still being fairly long, the weather is acting like late summer/autumn which tricks the rest of nature into acting accordingly.

Just noticed this morning all around the bottom of one of the crab apple trees totally littered with little marble to golf ball sized baby apples.

So it's dropped them for some reason, presumably the cold.

A lot of fruit disappeared off the fruit bushes as well.

A very, very, strange year.

I have noticed for some weeks our hedges and bushes have leaves showing all the symptons of autumn, l blame the excess rain and continuous high wind and gales.

Completely normal, it is the tree deciding how many fruit it can support and dropping the surplus.
It is called the June drop but often happens in July.

Yes, I've seen it before both on the crab apples and now as I have more apple varieties starting to produce.

But not on this scale.

Summer's over, Wimbledon's finished & England have lost in the final of a football competition again,
nights are drawing in, its autumn
Actually, I do agree with you.

Just as you do I enjoy being pessimistic. I find that if you expect the worst then you are rarely disappointed. Every morning when I awake I make a point of having a little smile: and just get it over and done with.

But I cannot honestly believe that after an admittedly rather wet and cloudy summer the trees really do think that it is autumn in July?

With the amount of rain over the last 12 months + the trees have had their roots sat in water a long time, they don't like it and the signs of stress are showing.

I was digging out blocked drains today (blocked with tree roots ironically) and until I hit the drain at about 6' the soil was just dust. Much to my surprise.
