"The agreement we have negotiated - in record time and in challenging circumstances - goes far beyond the existing EU deal, as it secures new wins for British businesses in our great manufacturing, food and drink, and tech industries," she said.

(Incidentally it has now made the BBC website)

This is great news and for such a massive target market of the Uk it’s some achievement. Although it is only an “agreement in principle“ and not yet a signed FTA. But nonetheless it’s a great boost for the UK economy as (extract) “ UK businesses will benefit from tariff-free trade on 99% of exports to Japan. Government analysis shows that a deal with Japan will deliver a £1.5 billion boost to the UK economy and increase UK workers’ wages by £800 million in the long run.”...........

Woo-hoo.
The UK's total trade with the EU was GBP 659.5 bn in 2018. The UK's total trade with Japan was GBP 29.1 bn in 2018.

If each one is as good as Japan’s deal and adds 0.001% to the UK economy - this time next year Rodney.

What stupid posts, so what? Why did the EU want a free trade deal with Japan considering its relatively small proportion of trade? UK EU trade will continue as it is as near as damn it, diminishing each year, you two know this and just spew the bile regardless.

They are factually correct so why are they stupid? What the point in talking trade if we don’t talk about these deals in relative terms.

It took the BBC news at 1 a good 25 minutes to report it- so it must be a good deal for the UK then.

Why are some people so negative about a trade deal with the 3rd largest economy in the world? Perhaps they thought it couldn't be done- perhaps they want the UK economy to fail.
How long did the EU- Japan deal take to negotiate?

I don’t think anyone is “negative” about the deal, but let’s get it into perspective. I’m actually keen to know what opportunities there are for us to exploit, trade is what makes me tick, I look for opportunities so am keen to know more. Japan is country I know little about so if anyone knows that this deal actually means and not what gov say “it should do” would be appreciated.

It takes a long time to negotiate a trade deal. Any trade deal! That’s a given!
It takes a comparative jiffy, to cut and past the provisions of an existing deal (EU Japan deal), throw a few minuscule irrelevant details on top, and claim it as your own. A BIG success.
Fact that it contributes zero incremental trade over the EU version, is merely an annoying footnote in history.
More embarrassingly perhaps, is the fact that being forced to accept a virtual carbon copy of the EU version, dramatically negates claims of new found “sovereignty”.
I note Liz, didn’t get to offload the pallet of Stilton in this version of the deal. But that’s ok! The plan is that Liz will stand up in Parliment next year, and announce with a straight face, that she will introduce new domestic legislation to “tidy up some loose ends of the Japan deal”, which will break international law. She will commend this new legislation to the house, with a British assurance that “Japan needs us more than we need them”!
