Very sick cow with crusting nasal discharge, mouth dripping and very poor

Vet seems to come up with list. Speak to another stating should be doing this and that now we are running around in circles here the poor thing is suffering. Closed herd high health, in calf AA

Very depressed, head down, heavy heavy breathing. Nose is pouring with mucus and mouth siliva.

When she came on Sunday she said could be IBR, Myco bovine now shes mentioned over the phone MCF yesterday

Ok, whats the plan anyone. Taken temp under 40. Seeing her and hearing here is really upsetting.

Should I phone up again and ask to speak to the vet that specialises in cattle illness and ask them to come out again? Getting to a point where its not right to continue like this.

I had one sounding like that on foot and mouth year. Vet crapped himself when he first saw it but it was Malignant Catargh ( that might not be spelt right)

Hope for IBR but sounds like MCF. Head and eye form.
Anti inflammatories and cover with broad spectrum antibiotics ( it’s a virus though).
Isolate.
Then cross your fingers.

Vet came yesterday (different) didnt think MCF as temp low and not atypical in lots of ways. He took 3 lots of bloods and jabbed with steroids however overnight deteriorated and died. Still doing bloods and be useful to know what it was.

Eyes were not watering.

Typical one of the nicest and calmist cows weve got and in-calf. He did say poss some kind of virus with poss liver damage. Expensive few days.

Did the vet not take any bloods to confirm a diagnosis, or were they acting as blindly as we are on the forum?:scratchhead:

Sympathies - I lost a very nice little heifer to this horrible disease last year. Typically she was one of my pets :( . It's a real pig that the test takes 2 weeks for the result - we had to cull her before we got the results as she was truly suffering.

We’ve lost a couple over the past year or 2 with MCF, have a couple of bulling heifers tested positive again this year but seem to have caught them quick enough and they are making a good recovery, but how and why they are getting it is still a mystery as they are bought in calves, been in different fields than the others, not been in contact with sheep but yet still seem to be catching MCF from somewhere [emoji57]

Bringing an old thread back to life! Have just had a milking cow diagnosed with MCF. Never heard of it before. She’s recovered pretty well, symptoms never really that bad but she still can’t see very well. I saw you had some that recovered from it, did they loose their sight as well? She’s been isolated in a barn but is happily eating and milking so was just wondering what chances of her sight coming back are. She’s had it for at least 2 weeks, only just got lab results through from vets

I lost a suckler cow to it last year, confirmed not IBR which was vets first thought.

Horrid how quick it died, upsetting that it was blind too.

I had to read a bit about it as I had little knowledge - they may temporary recover but the risk it it will reoccur later on and damage done by the virus unsure whether blindness will recover. May fully recover. I had to watch it suffering on the floor and kicking about as the OH said she may recover. After this I vowed to never let an animal suffer like this again.

There is no risk to the other bovine but my understanding is that the virus

Thank you! Interesting reading. I’ll see how she does but will step in if she starts suffering. I would say her symptoms (apart from the eyes clouding) were mild after reading those articles. Did you ever have anymore or was it just a one off? Our neighbours sheep do get out on some of our grazing land so thinking that’s where it could have come from.
