Vet / Lambing student

Do you all worry about a stranger coming onto your place possibly spreading covid to you at a time of year that is so important to be led up?
Are you getting these students tested pre placement?
Our daughter is being tested 3 times next week at secondary school, would uni students be offered the same?
We turned any help away early on, same as last year, sad as our daughter will be in this position in a few years and can feel for the students.

I do up to a point, but my other half is a police officer, so she goes out and deals with the great unwashed on a daily basis. So I kind of think a lambing student probably wont be my greatest risk. Could go tits up of course. Fingers crossed!

Sad situation with the students and placements. I’ve somehow got onto the Surrey list. Must of had 10 enquiries in the last month. Really unusual for this time of year.
Anyone that can give a placement should consider it. It’s one way of giving something back.

I’m going to miss mine. Her last day today. Been very helpful and just lambed a double, lambs both with all legs back and one upside down.

Have hardly fed, ringed or tagged a lamb in two weeks!

Going to miss ours too. She's 12 and goes back to school on Monday... Still be home for the next flock at Easter holidays

That's our worry with schools going back. Had so many enquiries this year. They sound so disheartened when I say no.
Do find it so much easier on our own logistically though

I have three vet/ag students helping me this year at different times. One of which has done lambings for me on and off since he was 15 and is quite capable of running the shed himself. There’s also another girl coming to help as she’s bored with being at home with her parents.

I have always paid my work experience students a bit as I feel it’s right to- not sure I can afford four though!

I just kind of feel that if we don’t do it we won’t have any large animal vets left. This lambing for first half it will just be me on my own for a bit so will appreciate the help and company.

I’ve got 7 booked for this year, 3 lots of 2 students living in, and a lad out of the village who I’ve trained for the last 4 years, now he’s at vet school and wants too come back! I can bugger off after breakfast sorting hoggs etc and when I get back he’s organised everything and it’s all sorted just how I want it done! 👌
