Warranty Wise

Recently we bought a small 2nd hand car for our children to learn to drive in and then use.

The supplying non franchised dealer arranged for 3months warranty cover with Warranty Wise. This is now coming to an end, and we have had prompts to renew the cover, at first glance the cover that I think would apply to it looks good.

I am debating whether to renew the cover or not, historically I have always viewed warranty companies with great suspicion, always finding a reason not to pay out. However, I was under the impression that Warranty Wise, with its Quinten Wilson connection was not like this, so I am considering keeping up the cover.

Has anyone else had a vehicle covered by them? How did it go when you made a claim?

If it matters, the car in question is a 2015 Plate Kia Picanto, with approx 58000 miles.

All thoughts gratefully received.

How much is the warranty? Don’t take this the wrong way, but it isn’t a particularly high value or unusual car so is it worth throwing money at a warranty?

Wife changed her mokka in March through motor point and their own warranty was a bit crap so I went through a lot of small print of different ones. Motor easy seemed the best cover but were dear but came back with a discounted price which was as cheap as anyone else's and three free extra months. After all that, the car has only done 21000 miles so we didn't take up the offer anyway. Think it was £300 for 15 months. Some don't cover cat converter, built in stereo etc. If your car overheats from rad leak or fan belt, most don't cover the head cracking or other consequential damage

Kia’s are not that expensive to repair, parts costs are low and Labour rates are also low when compared to other more expensive brands / personally for this car I would chance it - we also run a Kia and several other brands - the Kia so far has been absolutely bullet proof - Kia Sportage 2014 - I’d chance it - warranties are not cheap

if your slightly mechanical it’s not a difficult car to maintain

unless the engine or gearbox shites itself which it probably won’t the warranty isn’t worth the paper it’s written on anyway

In all the bumpf they have sent me they dont actually tell me how much it will cost me, so i'll ring them on tuesday and go from there. The type and age of the car and its value are also making me wonder if its worth it.

I bought a car from a dealer and it was coming with a 3 month AA cover. When water pump started leaking on it local garage did the job but told me to try and fight AA myself as they had given up on them as not one claim had been paid.

Keep in mine that I'm on the other side of the world, but:

I always recommended to customers that if they aren't working on or fixing the car themselves, a comprehensive mechanical insurance policy is almost always worth it. Warranty companies were generally excellent to deal with from my experience and I saw them save people 10's of thousands of dollars in repairs - in some cases, vehicles were written off and collected by the insurer, deemed to be uneconomical to repair.

You do have to keep up with the servicing though, easy to prove if you're having it serviced through a workshop, not so much if you're doing the servicing yourself. Also read the policy wording closely, some of the cheaper policies don't cover much.

For a cheap car like that, I'd imagine the policy itself and the excess would be extremely cheap.

Crunch the numbers yourself, you'll soon see if it's worth it or not.
