Water going off in troughs

Anyone got an ingenious solution to stop water going bad when the weather's hot? A few days of heat and its all gone green, its from a spring which seems to go off faster than mains water.

Depending on tank size, but 4 to 10 ish perhaps, don't forget them in the winter.

Smaller tanks so keeps fresher , reduce water capacity by ballast of some kind in tanks .

Plug the inlet and refit a float valve before the cows go in

I’ve put stop taps on a lot of mine just let it trickle in so it’s not filling up and going off

We use copper sulphate in oz, you can buy blocks or buy a 20kg bag etc.

Clears up algae.

yes exactly or no tank at all its not rocket science is it. cant beat a small amount on demand especially with sheep ,dairy cows in milkj a slightly different matter but then they shift it much faster.

When you find something that works would you mind dropping a line to these folks.

They're having fierce bother keeping our big drinking trough clear and haven't a notion what to do about it, so they need all the help they can get.

Couple of my troughs have a brown sort of algae growing on the sides, you can see air bubbles stuck to it. These 2 are crystal clear, I'm assuming it's filtering the water somehow, don't know what it's called. Tried moving some to other trough with no success

Do you not need to watch the copper intake for the stock?

Yes, thats why i use mainly trough blocks which tell you how many litres it can treat, i am short in copper on my ground and it actually improves the stock, especially on angus you can see there coat go reddish due to hair folicles dying from copper shortage, i use multimin but also use trough blocks.

If using it from a bag need to measure for trough size.

Its very common practice here.

Brown scum is diatoms, they filter water. Weird creatures, neither plant nor animal. They often clump together and float on sunny days, then sink back in smaller patches. Alien among us

Interesting, might try moving some again
