Water leak help

Very hard to find a leak during/after a wet period. Water may track along a pipe or other areas surfacing some distance from the leak. I know someone who missed a leak as the water found it's way into a land drain. If you know where the pipe run is you could start by installing a few stop cocks to give give some clue.

I read our water meter and it indicates we've used nearly 5 times more water than expected. Our water bill will be HUGE.

Does Wessex Water give a business a water leak allowance?
How much allowance have people received? if any!

The pipework involved covers 5 troughs and 3 stand pipes.

I don't know where to start looking for the leak, there's no obvious wet patches. And to complicate things there's natural wet areas in the fields.
What is your normal usage? And over what timescale?

After a high bill one year, 2 or 3 times our normal reading we called Severn Trent out. The leak was our side of the meter so not their problem. Dry weather and no obvious wet patches. The pipe from the meter was an old black plastic one which they thought might be the cause. They didn't have any leak detectors, we would need to get in a private company. As we had reported the problem, it was now an official leak and down as a wasting water. We would be receiving an official letter telling us to get it fixed or we may be liable for a fine. Seemed a bit rich as the water board are out most days round here fixing leaks. We got the letter and chucked it into the bin as the man that came out to us advised. We got the leak sorted ourselves, -several drips from various taps in the house, in the field these would never have been noticed.
This is what I am scared of. That once I report it they may tell me I have a certain number of days to fix it or I'll be fined. I switched the water off immediately, gathered some info and advice (inc here) and formulated an action plan, so that when I informed Water2Business I was more confident that I could fix the leak in a timely manner.

Update :
The water company has dug up between the meter and my boundary and didn't find a leak. They say the leak is definitely in my fields.
I have been trying to work out how the troughs and stand pipes are connected. I still don't know for sure.
I and others have been walking the fields to try to work out wether any wet patches are natural springs (there are many) or rain water or from the leak.
I fixed a tiny leak on a join next to a trough.
During the sunny days we were advised to switch the water on and see if any water bubbled up anywhere. We didn't see anything before it rained again.
I've been taking regular readings. By my calculations 4 times as much water is being consumed than average.
Someone is kindly going to try water dowsing.
I'm starting to run out of ideas.

I use a little in line water meter to help find leaks. It takes the guessing out of whether water is flowing or not
Do you have an inline water meter on several pipes? Where are they located?
I was hopping to add a stop cock where I would find a join from one trough to a another trough, but only found one join and there's a stop tap there already.

you have my sympathy, have the same problem with loads of fields with water troughs and previous owner did not provide any plans or valves at each point. we are over a mile from the meter.

Do you have any piped ditches in the fields? A different scenario, but could help you. My front garden originally had a open ditch which was piped with concrete pipes years ago. Water board paid a visit and said there was a leak. Turns out the concrete pipes had been laid on top of the lead supply pipe and had worn through it. Mains water was flowing straight into the ditch and away. Never had any wet patches and it had been like it for several years.

One way of telling is if the grass is bleached, the chlorine in the water turns the grass white.
