Water leak out of Perkins Timing Civer?

Manitou MLT626. Perkins engine.
I haven’t investigated closely but there appears to be water leaking out of the engine timing gears cover possibly at the crankshaft seal. How can this happen?
Initially I thought it was the water pump but it appears OK.
Not a lot but getting worse.

Is there any scummyness or rainbows in the top of the radiator?
Is the oil level where it should be?
Had it been stood a while before you noticed the leak?
I'm thinking head gasket

The oil level isn’t dropping as fast as it normally does. I’d noticed that over the last couple of days.
The radiator is still scummy thanks to the transmission oil cooler coil busting a few years back and isn’t noticeably worse.

We’ve got the same on a Massey. Timing covers are currently unavailable which is a bit of a headache. We’ve parked it up until we can work out what to do with it .

We need the cover and the case, leaking in 3 places now

Looks like it’s between the timing casing and engine block near the hydraulic pump. Doesn’t leak until under pressure/warmed up.
I think it will still load the drill later this month if l keep an eye on water level.
Then strip over winter.
Wouldn’t araldite type epoxy fill a gap/ liberal dose of hylomar blue.
Glad I’ve not got 600 tons beet to load!
But if this can’t be fixed cheaply it could be the last straw. I just can’t afford to spend much more on this business.

We had it corrode through on our Matbro. It let the coolant into the dump though.
luckily we realised before any serious damage was done.

top corner of timing case to block behind injector pump, common to leak, as is the thermostat housings etc and water pump.

you will almost certainly need a new timing case if you take it off. Disregard the above common on not available there are so many different covers for these engines its unlikley yours is the same as that guys massey.

The reason you will likely need a timing case is cause it will be corroded either were its leaking on that top corner OR more commonly inside the cover were they always corrde and dump the water in the sump, which is might not be doing now but normally when you take the cover off they have big holes in them so well on there way to dumping water in the sump.
The other reason to replace is the bolt on that top corner will be badly corroded due to water leaking up the bolt hole, its a long bolt that holds water pump, timing case cover and the timing case on to the block. you will normally shear it off at the head then have to cut the corner off the timing case to get the case off.

Ideally its an engine out job as the case is connected to the sump but it is possible to do in situ if you are particular about cleaning, cutting the sump gasket right and using the right glue.

Let me know if you want me to sort parts out.

Thank you very much for that info. I’ll tackle it in a few weeks time and will be in touch. 👍
