Is there any weed killer available or a mixture of sprays that works on holly bushes that are about 18 inches high. I was told to put round-up on the stump but that's not practical.

Local council put hessian bags of road salt on the stumps of ash which had been cut off.

How is roundup not practical when it is the very herbicide for the job?

I'd guess there's too many stumps to go around painting each individually? If you can cut them off again, spray the regrowth. There are better chemicals to kill brush then glyphosate to kill by spraying, fall is usually the best time.

Given its taken the best part of 30 years for the holly bushes my late father planted in various hedgerow gaps to get going, the idea of trying to kill them off seems a bit of a backward step

You have to cut it and paint it on the stump or inject it into the stem, it's slow and time consuming, there could be a few hundred of them, I want something that I can spray on with a knapsack and roundup doesn't work on the leaves because there is a waxy coating on them and doesn't absorb it.
