Early November is around the point at which you'd consider swapping to spring barley, according to the "old boys"

The max yield brigade around here have been planting winter barley before winter wheat. To be fair they get very good yields but I would imagine it's a spray salesman's wet dream.

My old neighbour used to plant winter barley in the spring well into March for a seed crop. He always had a crop even though you would think it would never vernalise. This is on sandy loam soil.

You do your best which is right on the day you do it. You have little control over what happens after. Weather here was supposed to be very wet all day but it has yet to arrive. At least I won’t get stuck with the strimmer ?

I am afraid it has now and it has been here for about 3 hours so far

I once ran out of spring barley seed so put 1cwt of winter in to finish an inner headland run, It got to 6" tall and leafy never did owt, I'd have been better leaving the drill crossovers as triangles! But that was a late late year! Early may maybe?

Don't expect to get my winter barley drilled now if tonight's and Fridays forecasts right. I'd be tempted to swap in some spring barley just for an experiment. It's going to tits up my 3 crop rule if I don't do one or the other.
