What grease?

Got a verge mower with a ball end that gets quite a lot of pollen / sap around it. Unless given grease every 5-6 hrs when working, it stops taking grease, you have to dig the old grease put with a pick then it’ll take it again. The grease goes hard and grainy.
Using Morris K42EP multi purpose grease at the moment. Would different grease last longer?

Would it be worth rigging it up with an autolube system? Now much movement does the mower do in work? Might not be worth it for the annual workload. I think many autolube systems are set to pump in a shot of grease every 20 minutes or so? Worth exploring using fully synthetic? Probably all fruitless.

would 5th wheel grease be a better bet

As already stated the Blue Lithium EP2 SV is the only stuff I use now. Very durable and doesn't cut up with water like the general stuff. Not much more expensive either

I find the blue stuff tends to form a skin and harden quickly? Should I be adding grease more frequently?

Been using the red lithium stuff from Total recently, mostly on loader bushes and implement roller bearings. Seems a nice compromise; much better lube than ep2, stickier but still relatively viscous compared to blue stuff, and doesn't form the skin?

Thats interesting, the only real difference between the blue and red is the temperature difference. Red being that few degrees more resistant.
All depends on how regularly you grease these parts to I suppose yes.
I've had no issues with the blue but maybe different brands vary, I use Gem.

Personally I’d swap it over to a polyurea grease, we use it for almost everything. You’ll probably still need to grease it very frequently at first to flush out the lithium grease as they don’t mix well but after that I’d be confident it would be better in the end. You can get it from a JD dealer, they call it Severe Duty Polyurea.

Where’s our resident lube expert , @Cowabunga ?
I think this is the ideal application for a Moly grease. It’s more like a plain bearing than a roller or ball bearing and grease containing molybdenum disulphide is great for this and doesn’t tend to dry out. It’s too good at being anti-friction for ball or roller bearings because the rotating elements tend to stop rotating, those being the balls and rollers. Probably well worth trying a tube or two.
