What is a woman?

Dropped a box of lucar connectors on the floor the other day, they didn't complain being sorted as male and female... I'll also put my neck on the line and say the shaft on the back of the tractor identifies as male... as its poked into the sloppy hole in the back of the tractor I will go all out and announce the tractor is female.

Back to the question of a woman, well its a terminology really, generally for an adult female human, but then the phrase "he's an old woman" leads me to think maybe a woman could be described more accurately as a person that faffs about and struggles to make decisions, choosing to argue why or why not, ranging multiple different topics, rather than just getting on with it or simply sitting the f**k down.

If it was the case that some men were pretending to be women just to win in women's competition, then a rule change would be a good thing. What you do in terms of the remaining real trans athletes would be a difficulty that would persist.
Simple solution, give the trans athletes their own category.
Alternatively, as we now live in the age of equality just have one category allowing everyone to enter, winner takes all.

I recently heard the eminent doctor Prof Robert Winston being interviewed re gender re assignment and he said “you are born as a female or male and that never changes as far as your hormones and DNA is concerned and I agree with him. These people who crave both physical and hormonal treatment to change I find difficult to come to terms with. Is it more a physiological thing that triggers feelings and leads to full on change? I really don’t know but I find the whole thing disturbing for mankind. The recent decision by British cycling to ban reassigned men to compete is correct as in their make up they will still have male hormones which would provide a physical advantage over real females. Apparently they have had to create an “open series”. Sorry but the world is going all woke and mad. Perhaps I’m old fashioned but I do t feel like that.

I don't know much about the psychology of gender dysphoria or why someone would want to question or otherwise change their gender but I do know that some pretty serious processes begin in puberty and taking hormones and the like to halt or disrupt these processes can have implications for health for the rest of one's life.

For women, oestrogen is a pretty big deal as it has so many systemic affects all around the body. If you suddenly don't have that hormone, things like bone health take a pretty steep nose dive.

If you take these hormone blockers before or in early puberty, you could end up completely infertile for life. This kind of thing is not always reversible. Functional changes to the sexual organs happen in puberty, along with the development of secondary sexual characteristics. If you put a stop to these, then you have to try to convince the body to develop differently and that kind of decision you can't just decide isn't right for you one day.

I can accept that some people have a real feeling that they are the wrong sex, I have seen good evidence for this and have heard as much from a genuine expert on the subject, and I am fully prepared to make some allowance for it. But the bottom line for me is that I won't go along with something which I don't just 'believe', but which I know to be untrue.

In this case that is the claim that a man can 'become' a woman, and vice versa; it can't happen. If anyone accepts that 1 +1 = 2 and that H₂O is a water molecule they have no grounds at all to argue against molecular genetics and the facts of DNA analysis. Anyone who doesn't accept that sum and that chemical formula probably isn't capable of coherent thought and cannot be debated with.

'Identifying' as something, be it whatever, self-evidently does not equate with factually being it. It is an obvious fact that some people think they are or should be of the opposite sex and, as I have written, some allowance can and I think should be made for this in a humane society. But thinking that one should be something, or even believing that one is simply does not equate to being it, and it is manifestly absurd that it should be pretended as being so, both by the given individual and most certainly by the rest of us.

Of course being an honest and rational acceptor of scientific fact, I am not dogmatic in this; if anyone claims that 'identifying' as something does make it so, and can prove it to be, I will accept it.

One has to be careful about just how much of the world one declares is objective fact. There is no doubt objective truth out there in the fabric of the universe, but it's unlikely that we will get a glimpse of very much.
