What noise do tractor brakes make when going bad?

Had the 6480 out for first time in nearly 3 months. Had the dump trailer on and when turning right off the road while braking there was a deep groan from the brakes. I thought it was the trailer brakes but tested it again without the trailer and it are the same noise but only when turning while braking.. I tested them multiple times on the straight and no noise, tried the independents one at a time and no noise.

Ominously the check filter light came on just after heading off to the quarry but it went out after 15mins, I've never seen it before.

I will slacken the filter and see what the oil looks like. The noise wasn't really what I would expect, it was quite a deep sound. Any help welcome

Filter light is ominous best to remove filter and open it up to see if it’s dirty,,,,,not a big job to remove trumpet housings and check the discs etc peace of mind. If brakes wear and filings go round the system it can be a whole world of pain, I’ve had brakes destroyed and no noise whatsoever!!

Thanks. Im assuming if the brakes have sh!t themselves it will be pretty obvious from the contents of the filter?

If you leave the brakes it can spill I to lots of other problems.
Reminds me we were silaging and I got on one of the carting tractors to move it and you could handler stare it the lad said it had been like it for a while I stoped him using that tractor and parked it up till the brakes and stearing were sorted I said to him why could you not tell me when there were problems with machinery.

More I'm thinking about it more I'm thinking of getting it done regardless, it's due a back end service anyway. I've done 3075 brakes before and just changed the discs and they worked fine. Would changing discs suffice again or do the shoes need changed to? Iirc they are pretty expensive

Depends how far gone they are. Won't know till opened up. You get ones with Kevlar coating for MFs, there more expensive but worth extra.

You won’t know what needs changing till you get in there.Damage to the plates will be obvious ,if they still smooth and not warped they will be fine

Weve just had the brakes done in our 6480 for peace of mind. Heard of a few older tractors now because the discs are quite old bits have started to come off even with plenty life left on them.We got discs and pistons so we knew job was right. Its not a big job really if caught early.

How many hours does your 6480 have?
do you have to change all the oil and filters to do the brakes ?
Mine was just shy of 7000hrs and we bought 2nd hand with around 2500 hrs, as far as i know it was still on the original brakes. Not sure if you HAVE to change oil and filters but when youve gone to the trouble of putting new brakes in i dont know why you wouldnt want to start with clean oil and filters.

Think about 7700. I think you need all the oil out, a good time to do it anyway, the oil ain't cheap either
Mine is about the same hours. My brakes made a funny noise once but never again. Recently changed the oil and all the filters.

I’m not a good mechanic just wondered if all the oil had to come out when doing that job.

Yeah you'd lose most of the oil taking thr trumpets off, so as well to drain it and carry out a full service.

I've done the 3075, it's not that complicated but my problem was I didn't have a shed big enough to work at it in so ended up at it outside using the mini digger to lift the trumpet. The in end of the trumpet is way heavier than the out end so it was difficult to balance it level. Then a wind go up as I was trying to put it on after applying the sealer to the facings. It was a bit of a nightmare

Just a thought, i did have a rear wheel bearing that started to crunch/ groan when cornering and when weight was shifted onto it. Would disappear for a day or 2 then come back. But cant say it was in any way related to using brakes

Yeah I'm not sure why it only made this noise while turning and braking, not one did it make the noise going straight so maybe it's not brakes at all. The warning light for the filter is what's making me think its brakes but it might be a red herring
