what to do with 4 acres

You have a smallholding. Try your hand at a little mixed agriculture, maybe, and plant up a vegetable garden?

Obvs, I don't know your location and immediate growing conditions, but 4 acres tended in time that would otherwise be lost to the commute might be doable.

I've got about 4 acres or so that I used to have 5 horses on it but now I'm down to just 2 horses, I don't want anymore horses but need the grass keeping under control would 5 or so sheep be any good and what sort of maintenance and price should I be paying to buy them and would they need selling off every year. Is there any other way to earn from the land I don't mind hard work

I had a very interesting letter from someone looking for four acres in my area, she runs a buisness selling access to well fenced paddocks for dog walkers. They have exclusive access for certain time - slots, it seems.

Seems a very good idea.

Isn’t that the kind of place people take there out of control dogs for a bit of ‘freedom’. If a walker gets hurt by a cow the farmer normally ends up in court.....

who’s fault is it if a child gets hurt by a dog on your land

We have one nearby. Coded entry I believe on a timed access. Book online turn up £10 per hour. Someone there all the time. Good money earner. Neighbour tops it - I would want 10 grand like. Field full of dog turd at the end mind you.

Allotments. Money for nothing and your chips for free.
Money too let a bunch of people build shanty towns all over your field. We tried it. Stipulated very strongly in the association agreement that no garish sheds, no rough greenhouses, no rough tin. Must be kept tidy. They just wouldn't be told so after 2 years we refused to renew the lease. Got called all sorts of names in the local area.

Took us 2 weeks with a digger and a telehandler to rip all the sh1t up, pile it up for Nov. 5th and get it back too a field we could work with.

Never again! 😞

Could you let it to a gundog trainer? Mini game preserve, rabbit pen, pond, pigeon loft, etc.? Could be used for training other dogs too. Try local dog clubs, field trial societies, etc. But these things always depend on local demand. I prefer something mail order to keep the beggars at a distance!
