dont usually keep ewes and lambs indoors more than few days , but this year due to local keep issues and value of fat lamb , have kept them in longer than normal to get everything eating creep before turnout , had a bit of issue with cocci in lambs 2-3 weeks old , nothing dead but hit a couple hard , do most people give a second dose in about another 3 weeks or will natural immunity kick in ? , i have read a lower dose is more effective in long term cover and immunity (not so sure about resistant strains though ) . just wondered what most usually do as a routine on indoor lambs .

For indoor lambs, I always dose once with Vecoxan at 4 weeks old (same time as first Hep P), then give access to a DB bucket in the creep to tidy up any that would perhaps of needed another dose.

thanks , my vets are now charging over £50 for script these days and for the 2 or 3 i normally use over 200 lambs , getting expensive using buckets , have been practicing with the general mineral / imuherb ones after an outbreak in november in shearling crop, intakes seem ok and all dried up but dont want to risk young lambs on them .

I'd challenge that prescription cost. I'm pretty sure there is a legal maximum they can charge, which is a long way below that! It was introduced to open vet supply to competition, otherwise vets would just charge £50 to stop anyone using the online pharmacies.

Isn’t their now buckets that don’t need a prescription, they don’t have deccox in them but some other thing that doesn’t need a prescription. Don’t know if they are any good, the price of brinnicombe buckets plus prescription it’s cheaper to drench them, the ingredients in the buckets are different from a few years ago and lambs seem to go through them quicker.

Yes, that’s the ‘imuherb’ ones that @andybk referred to above. No idea if they work as not a great believer in leaps of faith. They’ve been available for a couple of years so presumably someone can report by now?

DB changed to using maize in their buckets for a year (for some stupid reason) and intakes were ridiculous. They’ve since changed them again, otherwise they’d have had no sales at all! The new mix is better, but still not as low intakes as the originals were.

Any other vets in the area? I’d certainly be looking if they have that attitude! If they are taking the pee on something so simple, what else are they overcharging for?

The original buckets they used for imuherb were 3 in1 zintec ones , nothing would eat them , (they admitted that to me later ) the new ones are more like the deccox ones , intakes pretty good , and stopped an out break few months back ,

I haven’t used them for a couple of years but I remember a bucket used to last nearly a month for 100 lambs or so and the sheep didn’t really touch them, when they made them of maize 1 lasted less than a week and I thought never again and went back to using vecoxxin.

I've a block of land I get bother with cocci on - ewes lamb at home then are taken (walked) to the grass parks when lambs are 2-3 weeks old. Normally have to dose lambs at 7-8 weeks old...

Would you be confident of using the imuherb buckets in that situation? How long do buckets need to be out with the mob before lambs are over the risk?

the only thing i can say is i had an issue in some 30-60kg ram lambs and intakes were good with new bucket , and all dried up (wasnt worms) , I think if you have a real challenge in young lambs your best sticking to drench , At the moment i would be happy to use them like the medicated ones where you get the odd challenge throughout the season , Intake of the zintec ones was a real issue , these latest ones seem fine and not a lot more expensive than normal mineral bucket .

They get cocci dose at same time as nemo dose usually. It's easily the biggest single day dosing I do and is a pain doing each twice (if only you could get a cocci drench with a white wormer in it!!) when you're working alone.

Once dosed they're fine the rest of the year - but because you work to what the majority of lambs are doing, the youngest ones don't get the full benefit of the dose and can be poor doers.

I really like the idea of the buckets but I'm not convinced young lambs (4-8wk old) would go to them?

Anyone use Shine minerals at Gisburn?

edit This lot

Is it true that the buckets have to be given to the ewes at housing, to reduce cocci egg output?

We only usually have a low level problem, although if we have to rehouse due to bad weather in April usually end up drenching twice.
