Few pale/yellowing patches appearing on the outside headland on 2 of my fields of KWS Orwell barley, some sort of semi circular, some more triangular. Sown approx 3/10/18, pre-em was 2-3 days later, nothing applied since. Previous crop was wheat that was chopped, field was disced and pressed prior to drilling and rolled after drilling. Not really to sure what it is, Agronomist is away for a week so thought I'd ask the collective wisdom on here (y)

Round up drifting through the hedge line.
Oddly we noticed a neighbours field with similar markings a few miles away, each area (looked browner and like it was dying as opposed to paling or yellowing) was perfectly opposite a gap in the hedge to the neighbouring field so I think it would be safe to assume that he was spraying when it was a bit drifty and has roundupped bits of his own crop.
However here, what you can't see on the right of the photo is a approx 12ft high hedge I suppose you would call it (trees, hedge, bushes and brambles etc) with very few gaps anywhere in it, then there's a 2 lane road, then another thick 4ft high trimmed hedge then the neighbours field which hasn't been roundupped so pretty sure its not that.

Could it have been exceptionally dry in shaded areas near hedge?
Quite possibly, some decent sized trees in the hedgerow providing shade and with roots sucking out moisture, the soil for about 18m out from that hedgerow is quite sandy on that part of the field, though there is a couple of patches elsewhere that are not in such sandy parts of the field but still near the hedge. Everything inside the headland tramlines of the fields is absolutely fine.

neighbours WB went real yellow for a while ,now seems to be growing out of it

what are the roots like?
I'll have to go digging with a trowel another day to get plants out with roots still attached. the couple of bits I got up looked fine to me in the field. This field looked absolutely perfect till about a week ago when these patches started appearing. The lesions on the leaves have got me a bit stumped.

Is every patch underneath over-hanging trees? Probably an idiotic suggestion but maybe the accumulated effect of rain/dew dripping down every day has washed the pre-em down to the plant?

As an aside, we have a whole 35 acre field that has had the pre-em washed down (fine sandy soil, disced after maize and drilled). Looks like s**t.

Patches are definitely near trees, whether each one coincides with a tree I'm not sure, will have to have another look. Some of the patches that stretch out to the headland tramline wont be under a tree as the trees don't hang out that far. Sorry to hear of your damaged field hopefully it can grow out of it.

I think it’s dry soil from tree roots as well.
Was it flufenacet/ DFF? If the crop has taken longer to germinate and extract moisture from roots it may have taken up more pre em

Crop was all up about the same time but agree it could be to do with that. Pre-em was Flufenacet, Picolinfen, DFF and Pendamethalin.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
