Which packer roller for a shallow stubble cultivator?

Last year I converted a 6m discordon to a shallow tined cultivator. We ran it last year at 6m wide, but the frame was made to allow a working width of 7.5m. All I need to do is extend/replace the packer. I am not a big fan of the original emopacker (similar to a dd ring) because it consolidates too deep (almost down to the working depth)on the rings and obviously not between them. The working depth is 50-75mm.

I have been looking at the otico plain tyre roller, the Tillso tyre roller with nobbles, and the kockerling/Horsch twin sts type packer. I don’t want anything with scrapers. I am concerned the tyre rollers will not provide any clod cracking in dry times, we are on very heavy Wallasea soils so it won’t be working down like an onion bed! The sts twin packer seems to be more of an all rounder to suit a wide variety of conditions.

Pics below show the machine, and the job it did. We are adding a levelling bar for this season to prevent the ridging effect of the back tines

A guttler packer roll would do what you describe and work wet or dry. Wouldn’t come cheap though.

Any one used the type of packer that looks like the rings are made of channel and is ment to fill with soil, it has two inter locking set of ring. Sounds a good idea as soil as is used as the wearing part, but just seams wrong to me and sound too good to be true.

It is a bit of a hybrid. I really liked the Horsch cruiser I had on demo, but ex-demo it was £50k for 6m. This will be half that price for a 7.5m including a new packer

It’s certainly not to good to be true. Kockerling pioneered the STS roller over 20 years ago.
I spent 15 of those years listening to Horsch, vaderstad, Kuhn, Amazone etc telling farmers is was no good.
A HO they now all have copied it!!!
As well as the soil acting as a kind of wearing part, the soil also creates friction which keeps the ring turning in the wet.
And soil also consolidates the soil better than steel.

This is what I am considering, Horsch and kockerling both use them

With a double STS roller you can put a cross board with the paddles in the rings.
This means you won’t be troubled by trash as the rings keep the board clean.

How do these packers stand up to stones. A disc packer is supported all the way round but the sts only has 3 spokes. Do they get dints. On these lager machines if a stone goes under the middle of the machine the hole weight (5 tons plus) of the machine can be placed on a single ring of the packer.

Stones don’t bother them. They will only go out of shape when they are completely worn out.
You can also weld new rings on if you did damage a ring. Also some machines they are fitted in weigh 12tons plus.

My neighbour has these fitted to his Kockerling Rebell T. Great design that carries the weight well and I can see it will last well and not take much power. The traditionalist in me prefers the slicing effect of a shouldered ring though I can see that the OP doesn't want that and it requires scrapers and horsepower.

Do the sts packers have the same weight as a dd packer or are they a light weight option. Do they always come in tandem or can you get a single one with the rings a bit closer together.

The sts packer is obviously initially lighter than the DD packer. But when you add in the weight of the soil in the rings
Then you would be closer to the weight of the DD.
Yes you can have a single row. But a narrow spaced double row will give better consolidation than a single row.
