Too much.

If Maize is £35T FW, then Oats will be around £20, possibly less?.
Assume 33% DM, then it's £60tdm.
Or assume an 18" crop is 5T/ac, then it's worth £100/ac FW.

That's on paper mind. Local supply, demand and drought will have an affect.

Indeed, that's why I put the on paper caveat in at the end.

£80 maize would make it £50 oats tops. £150tdm, which opens up a lot more alternative feed options instead.
Is forage demand that high in the S.E. though?

Depends how your grass looks I suppose. Expect them to double in height from panicle emergence. If you buy them and your later grass cuts are poor they will surely look cheap. If your neighbour buys them then of course you may announce how expensive they were.

Have 15ac wholecrop here no one in the area has a wholecrop header. Is it a big negative not to have a mill on the Harvester. Actually thinking of taking out the double chop considering its lighter crop this year. Should I consider cutting earlier or is this whole idea a big no.

With maize at £80/t what price would milk need to be to make it economically viable?!?

Our wholecrop is always cut green when the grain is just cheesy so no mill is required.
if you haven’t got a header a big m or tractor and mowers putting it into one award would do there is some grain loss but it’s not to bad

As others say take it sooner, the cons are a lower starch content and some grain loss with mowing/grouping.
The pros are, you actually get some forage and the starch you do get is more rumen friendly.

Pfftt, how longs a piece of string.
Say grass silage at £25T and maize at £80T fed 50:50.
So say 20kg/head of each, so £0.5 a day grass and £1.60 maize.
Go for a 33L ave with a conc cost of 8ppl and you have a ration cost in the region of 14ppl.

Double that as a safety net and you have an aspiration of 28ppl.

*Disclamer, 2 minute rough fag packet calculation.

anyone with acreage of decent maize, pits full of grass clear TB test and iffy milk contract this autumn could be a good time to get out then.......
