Cant get it to stay in overnight, smokes room out whenever we light it....so bad we dont use it.

Have had no problems with fires or woodburners before and i grew up in a house where the only source of heat was the above. Also have no issues lighting and using others at in laws or parents.

Just my experience but i wouldn't touch one again, its basically an expensive feature in our house that does nothing.

Which model? Ours is a small one, a Swift. A cheaper version of the Squirrel I think. Not Defra approved or something is the difference. No issues with smoke but we’re quite high up and exposed so always have a goid draw. While I can’t say I’m impressed with the heat it throws out I’m sat here in shorts and T shirt with a wall thermometer saying 23degrees!!

We put a ACR ashdale stove in a few years ago....very pleased with it. Its in a brown enamel so very easy to clean and still looks like new. Easy to light and throws out a lot of heat.

Has anybody got an inset stove that sits in the fire place opening.

We have a 16" baxi open fireplace in one room with a lovely slate surround that my father in law built. Want to replace fire with stove due to soot issues but can't lose the fireplace.

Or should we just extend the hearth and come further into room.

Father has a Woodwarm inset.
Its works well but don't think it gives off as much heat as our free standing 1.
Depending on your size of room and requirements that might not be a problem. Father's is in a large room but heats it fine.

My parents have a Riva I think it is, it’s in an 18” opening if I remember and is an 8kw one. It’s in a 20x12 foot room. It’s got a massive glass door on it and there’s no way you can stand in front of it when it’s going. The grandfather clock in same room always stops when stove is going!! You could never risk closing the door either once fire has been going for an hour or it would become unbearably hot!! I’d really recommend one of them if you don’t want the hassle of new hearth etc but no idea of other makes.

It’s one of these https://www.directstoves.com/stovax...-L7O0At2DEh7OH3ip9TJ5dHvLcv8DjroaApeNEALw_wcB

but didn’t cost near that much about 6 yrs ago!!

I think the smaller riva 40 would fit. Quite like the look of it too.

It is for a 16' x 16' room with 10' ceilings but there are two rads in room too if we need them.

I don’t think you would never need the rads whichever size stove you go for and stating the obvious it’s just a bigger stove will heat up a room quicker!!! You can easily maintain heat in a room with a few logs

I have a 25Kw Stratford stove to run a large kitchen, hot water and radiators in a good sized 3bed house. Works great, easy to use and control and would recommend it.
I also have a 6kw Firefox stove to run the front room, very good cheap stove. Does what it says on the tin and looks good for the price.

In the current climate I'd be more concerned of spending a couple/few grand on an install and then Boris & Greta outlawing it soon afterwards. = expensive scrap... I'd try any of the renown makes, but get the chimney lined, performance of whatever you decide will be as best it can then. If you are really draft free though, consider a connectable external air feed. Toasty 🔥🥵

I would Richard, we really like ours, enamel finish so cleans like new with a damp cloth, when cold....burns very clean with dry dry wood...as in glass stays clean. Been in 8 years, no issues. We got ours from , stove depot I think in Swansea, got a good deal

You will get more heat into the room if you bring it out into the room not going up the chimney

morso here is lovely to look at and chucks out plenty of heat BUT
struggle to keep it in longer than 3 hours . went back to the dealer and said this was no good, he said the flue was probably too good, never had it with any other customers!
I certainly wouldn't recommend a morso

Have you tried allowing it to burn down to a bed of embers then filling it completely with dry wood and reducing the airflow to virtually nil …?
