I deliver my own, i dread it, dirty hard to tie down not the best job in the world, few of them up here hire wool board press makes better for hauling.
I love it. one of my favourite jobs of the year.
i have taken ours the to the depot since i passed my tractor test in 1978.that was to a very local depot and when that closed in the nineties - i took it on to the next closest depot about 20 miles away

takes big part of the day - time i've unloaded and watched them grade most of it and been down to the fish and chip shop
(best in the south west)
i actually quite like the idea of wool grading as a job.bit late to learn now ...

also of course, there are wool board shearing courses ......(y)

I've only ever delivered my own since I moved up here, which is only 7 miles or so from Newtown depot. I load it the night before and head off early, and am usually back home for some brekky by half nine.
It's certainly a lot less hassle than chasing up some of the contracted hauliers the BWMB use (least cost tenders?:scratchhead:) and has been a bit of an eye opener. It always appears to be quite a slick operation once in the depot, despite the H&S rules regarding wearing a harness if you climb higher than 2' off the ground.:banghead:

myself and my far better half defo do not frequent there on a regular basis

The spicy chicken burger with hash browns and cheese is.....supreme! :hungry::hungry:

The wee envelope of wool prices has just dropped through the door this morning and just had the argument with my old man that not selling to the wool board won't help the industry.

Sadly he's finding it hard to be convinced as last year's wool sack is sitting not collected and the wool ruined after the haulier consistently failed to pick it up.

I'll take the wool in myself this year.

I got the wool price guide through the door Saturday..
Looks like they will be paying me less for this year when they pay next year than they will eventually pay me this year for last year
Had a ewe struck yesterday even though everything was due to be shorn Saturday but the shearers cancelled Thursday even through they were booked 3 weeks ago..
4th year in a row I've been dropped in it last minute by the 4th different lot of shearers :cry:
F**k this I think I'll be looking for a shedding ram and grading up my flock!

Out of interest all these shearers being paid in wool presumably have to sell to Ireland as they won't have a producer number?

Also I thought it was law we HAD to sell to the board unless a rare breed?

I know that is very frustrating but sometimes sh!t gets in shearers way. Weather bad sheep and scattered awkward set ups. What really pisses me off is when weather holds you up for a few days and guys feel the need to ring and guilt trip/abuse you about maggots ewes on their backs etc. when you are bursting yourself to get there. When told to try some themselves they quickly have manners. We try to look after everyone and if it does slide this year we make sure they are prioritised the next. Going thru 4 crews seems fierce bad luck. Hope you get it off them soon. But bear in mind the pressure shearers are under. Some people treat us worse than dogs. Luckily thry only do it once☺

It's not law...
It's your wool to do whatever you like with!

It is the law. The Agricultural Marketing Act 1958. This gives the British Wool Marketing Board the monopoly on the sale of wool in the UK. You are obliged to deliver up your wool to the Wool Board, who sell it on your behalf. You are exempt from this obligation if you own fewer than 5 sheep, you own one of 15 named rare breeds of sheep, you sell directly to hand spinners of wool, you live in the Shetland Islands (as they have their own scheme) or you are an artisan producer in which case you can use up to 3,000 tonnes a year.

The April 2008 review of the BWMB confirmed that this monopoly did not act against producer interests. It actually found that producers benefitted from the avoidance of price volatility.
