Hi everyone,we used to insure our working dogs through The NFU purely for vet fees their premium has now gone up to average £350 per dog for£4k of vet fees
Anyone got any better insurance or shall I lump the money into a “rainy day” account?
Thankyou

Rainy day account here, at least if no problems you've a lump of money at the end of it to do as you wish, the only time I've ever had anything to do with insurance on dogs the vet miraculously comes in just under the payout limit, often wasting time and putting the animal through more than it needs to go through with unnessary blood tests or xrays.

On the other side of the same coin I've had owners push for procedures to be done on animals when they are clearly just end of life because they are insured, all in all, do not recommend pet insurance

We've always had 2, sometimes 3 (1 retired and 1 new) working dogs her. Dad's said he can't remember needing to take any dogs to the vets. I've had to twice - 1 for exploded disc (IIRC 1 Jag of steroids and told to rest him), 1 for broken home in foot (they did x-ray and set it/first cast, but I canged it myself thereafter)

Save the insurance, rainy day IF you ever need it otherwise as some say it'll buy the next dog!

I do the rainy day account. At least if you did need something it’s always going to pay out. I put £50 a month away for my 3 dogs.

We've had a working stock collie on 3 legs since 5 months old. Insurance helped us with Op costs after some dosey cow hit us head on and he needed exploratory surgery to see if cruciate was gone after he slammed into the bulkhead of the crate in the pickup. Then hydrotherapy so get him back walking properly again. We're about even for what we've put into insurance.

We're now going to rainy day account as insurance fees are daft once they hit 7.

If he's done something whilst out we rest and then give our canine physio a call. £40 a session and has saved us a fortune on vet bills and insurance. Deals with working dogs and top agility and flyball dogs.

I hate owners that do that, pushing for unnecessary ops that won't improve the pet's QoL. Same for the supervet stuff, I mean what he does is great, but at what cost to the animal involved.

I had a dog on 3 legs. Cow stood on her and broke it, but got an infection under the cast and they had to take the leg of. She came home the next day as though nothing happened. She would hop around all day and could run a lamb down right to the end. I think it cost me £300 to get all the work done, but I did say that I would put her down if it cost to much (I wouldn’t ever really have done that!)

They're incredibly adaptive. I was having lots of surgery at the time we got him and he helped me through it. Felt if he can manage on 3 legs then I can manage with knackered ankle, prosthetic wrist and a rareish illness. if I was a sheep I'd have culled myself

Same here. Do think I would be here if it wasn’t for that dog! What she went through and would do anything for me got me through a very bad time.

Likewise.

Chatted to Mrs about what we're doing regarding insurance, currently we're still on insurance, but expecting massive jump in price come September. Then it's rainy day fund, which she isn't keen on given his age. She was tempted to go with 0% credit card just in case and put money aside in the meantime.

Starting from scratch it'd be setting cash aside.
