Anyone with a Jd R might be worth looking under the exhaust guard, packed with old grass burning away nicely

Not something that's unique to Deere. A lot of tractors have burnt out due to not being kept clean from straw, dried grass, birds nests etc.
Most would benefit from a regular blow down to remove debris, I've always thought it more important than washing them.
Problem is its tucked away behind guards that cant be seen and mabe hard to remove which doesnt encourage the operator to clean

We had a problem with our 5100R last year. The exhaust had a wee hole at the bottom for a few weeks , we thought we'd get round to fixing after silageing . In the mean time the tractor started going into limp home mode occasionally . Got the dealer out , plugged his laptop in says there's nothing wrong with it , and goes home. We get to looking round it we find that the wiring loom goes right under the guard , which had over heated because of the leaking exhaust and melted the wiring loom. So we fixed the exhaust , patched up the wiring loom with crimps and tape and it works!

Sounds like a common issue!
Heard of one where exhaust was "repaired " ny local welder but left a pin pr*ck hole.
Understand that ended with an insurance claim for a whole new loom!

Similar problem here but smouldering smoke from under the bonnet of 5100r. Turned out to be a mouse/rat nest on top of the engine. Luckily managed to put it out before it became flames.
