There is a little field outside Bicester, we used to pass regularly.
every time my father would recount the epic tale of a man engaged to mow these 2 acres. He managed this with a scythe in a day, but the contract was as much cider as he could consume. Which meant he finished it without his trousers ?

Can you still pick up little grey petrol fergies for around £2,000? Then buy a s/h topper which should cost under £1,000. OK, over budget but you'll be surprised how useful the tractor will be and if you are handy with spanners could appreciate in value.

If this is an all year round mowing project, or at least mowing all the time the grass is growing, from my 25 year experience of mowing my cricket pitch outfield, I'd avoid the trailed gang mower concept. They work OK when a) they're in good nick and well set up, b) the grass is not too long, c) the grass is not too wet, and d) the ground is not too damp. Get one or two of those factors wrong and you have a right old nightmare, damp grass jamming the rotors, damp cut grass building up under the frames lifting them up and losing drive, greasy grass surface meaning drive gets lost constantly.

My advice would be to get some sort of mower that has a powered cutter, and if the surface doesn't need to be cut cricket pitch close most likely a rotary machine of some sort rather than a cylinder one.

so on review i think the way to go will either be getting a ride on mower or a quad and trailing gang mower as i think the defender would be a bit too much effort in the turns.....
