Replacement for Quad, Suzuki Jimny & trailer or Suzuki Carry

I'm not about to pay the price for second hand quad at the moment and a new one isn't realistic when I try to balance the cost of it with the infrequent but necessary work it'll be doing.

What I'm trying to wrap my head around is, loaded on soft & hilly ground, which would be more capable. A Suzuki Jimny with a small trailer carrying a round bale of hay or, a Suzuki Carry with a round bale on hay in the tray.

Couldn't really decide on a photo as a 1,000 words about how challenging the land can be, there's worse than this but the vehicle doesn't have to go everywhere.

I know my friends Yamaha Grizzly 700 with bring my 6x4 trailer most places I need to go, so I guess the question is which other machine is closer in capability.

I don't want something too heavy as it'll either sink or chew the ground. The Jimny has a bigger engine but the Carry (I think) is lighter and one unit as opposed to hauling a trailer.

I've been in a similar position myself and decided on a quad . Thought to myself that a new quad should out last a second hand Jimny of a similar price. I could just imagine a Jimny turning into a rusty money pit with a costly mot every year . I'd still buy a Jimny over a gator if you are really looking for some comforts.

Get a quad, I've had 2 Jimmy's both were older models , excellent in any condition, in out of the weather etc. What ruined them for me was the rust and keeping the brakes right, I have a suzuki quad now and so long as I have a rain coat I don't really miss the jeep.

I use a 50hp 4wd compact tractor on big turf tyres and while it's not as good as a quad, it's less likely to disappear in the night... Warm in the cab too :) Can pull a trailer, or I use a bale cradle on the 3 point.

I also have a little 25hp Branson tractor which with better tyres, would be brilliant for your needs. 3 point linkage and PTO so is actually quite versatile. Actually bought for work in the solar farm here, but herself loves it to check ewes when lambing etc with a transport box on it. Useful in the woods. A bit slow, is the biggest failing for me.

Herself, collecting one her fat old ewes in last March... :)

Thanks for the replies, there seems to be a popular vein of wisdom on the right direction to go. I've given it some thought, while I'd like the Jimny, it'll take a lot of €'s to upgrade it, there's the rust issue and the fact it'll mostly be used on an exposed island. By the time I get it to where it'll need to be it'll be not far off the cost of a new quad, perhaps with less of a life span.

The Carry, I love the idea but the 660cc engine 🤷‍♂️

Talking it over with a couple of lads I know, I've come back to the idea of a quad, so I've another question which I might start another thread for ;)

Our Jimny works very well, but for that land a quad would surely be easier. Jimnys also don't have full diff lock, which could be a factor if your terrain is slippery.
