Teat seal issues

I queried this issue on the forum once before and concluded that it may have been administration issues

Firstly we are using a different sealant to usual. Ubroseal Blue.
We dried off 98 cows on Friday, this morning 44 hrs later I counted leaked milk on 37 beds and pools/puddles of milk a plenty
The beds were done the previous evening and there were 11 beds with milk on

Sealant administration was 100% correct that's not up for debate
Put on adlib hay to aid drying up and cleanliness

Cows were averaging 10L and even on 2x milking we would get 7-10% beds with milk leakage

So, is there an issue?
Is it the different sealant?
Any other thoughts?

Any time I try to go away from orbseal to any other seal (generally for cost) it just doesn’t work as well.

I was using cepralock and having similar issues to you, went to orbeseal and found much better results, vet informs me cepralock have changed there sealant now and it's better than orbeseal

From personal experience we have tried them all after starting our years ago using orbeseal only and having great results. Then having used all the other knock offs cepralock, noroseal etc to try and save £20 or whatever on a big box and having very poor results. Orbeseal only again and back to great results, lesson learned wont deviate again

Also using ubroseal blue and there is buger all in the tube compared to orbeseal etc can’t imagine it is expensive stuff to make don’t understand why they skimp on the amount in the tube!

Can't blame them for skimping on product and charging a lower price when from above they are getting business from farmers who want to save £20 a box compared to the top of the range

Used same sealant as you, normally orbeseal. Not that impressed either for the same reason, very little leakage in the past on Orbeseal. As @Scholsey says I felt like there was very little in the tube and also not as thick as Orbeseal. Be interesting to see if there are any knock on effects on early lactation mastitis rates.

Does anyone use these dry cow dips aswell as sealer when drying off
I do in the summer to help stop flies getting at teat ends, don’t tend to use it for spring calvers as there’s a lot less environmental risk and we see almost no dry period infections.

I often wonder if blanket teat sealant is worth it, our cows had 3 days of just hay pre dry off, last collection was 6 litres a cow, probably another 5-7 days of milking OAD and most would be all but dry. The less you do to a cows teat end the better, no matter how good your technique is at dry off there is always a risk of introducing infection. Cue the criticism....

I think the issue there is the keratin plug (or lack of) is cow specific. Some no doubt will be absolutely fine but how do you work out which ones they are?

I’m using orbseal then a double coat of T-Hexx. Don’t get any leakage and cured the problem I was having with flies and summer mastitis.
Think you need to try a mix of things and see what works. And one thing I’m learning as I get older, when something works well don’t interfere or try and cut corners. Few things have come back and bit me over the years.

I dabbled with nothing for a while but were getting to many getting mastitis 4/5 days after calving.

Farm I saw in America did nothing apart from the thexx stuff and it was no problem but they were in free stalls until the feet were out and then into a very clean pen and out again before they even think of lying down. We’ve selectively not used anything on some but I wouldnt with cows intended to calve indoors.

I’m not convinced that others don’t have as much in as orb ( 99% they are all the same weight) I think it’s deceptive because I think orb tubes push all the way in others don’t.

I had one cow who had an accident prior to dry off and got shoved in a straw pen and couldn't get her near the parlour so didn't get sealant

She's never had Mastitis before

She calved in with Mastitis in 2 quarters which concludes that expirement for me

I'm on the blue coloured sealant now and not had a problem thus far

Started using sealant last year,my experience so far,Cepralock isn’t worth shît,Orbseal now but not 100%,we regular dry cows off giving over 30 litres so a fair amount of pressure.
