Written by William Kellett from Agriland The French Agriculture Minister, Julien Denormandie, has announced that the killing of male chicks by methods of crushing or gassing will be banned from the start of 2022. The practice has been described as “barbaric” by animal welfare groups and...

    Lack of Small Abattoirs

The RBST and the Sustainabile Food Trust have been banging on about this issue for a bit. But it seems both the latest food report and George Eustice are missing the point re the important role of small abattoirs to farmers who sell direct or to local butchers. The big companies don’t want the...

    Tail docking for working dogs

How do folk get on with having tails docked on working gungog puppies. I am a bit miffed that my vets, who I consider very much still as a strong agricultural practice have refused to dock tails for a litter of cocker pups. These will be working gundogs and for their own welfare news to have...

Written by William Kellett New figures show the amount of antibiotic prescribed to treat pigs on UK farms in 2020 fell by 5%, bringing the total reduction since 2015 to 62%. This was despite disease outbreaks and challenges from disruption to pig flow during the pandemic that meant pigs...

Webinar - Colostrum quality: a golden opportunity to improve piglet performance

Colostrum quality in pigs is often overlooked in the UK and Ireland, but it can have a profound effect on piglet viability and long term health. The nutrients and antiobodies found in colostrum are directly responsible for providing immunity and energy to piglets. It is only secreted by sows...

The Times sticks the boot in to farm animal welfare

When I get a chance, I will take a photo of the Editorial in today's Times. It doesn't make for pleasant reading if you keep livestock as it relies on data from animal cruelty charities to accuse UK farmers of having welfare standards on a par with China and well below our European...

    low cost drinker/feeder

Have been working on a cheap drinker feeder system. Almost ready to send it out into the field. I have a bodged up trial one that works well, but it's too hideous to show you all! It will have a lower set of nipples around the front for piglets if they want to try something other than mums...

    Lame piglet.

Hi, just after a bit of advice on a lame piglet, he's a Tamworth GOS cross, about 9 weeks old and lame on his front left leg. I think he's gone down a hole or a ditch. I know they are hardy creatures and he's eating and drinking ok, do you think he will heal himself or does he need a vet? I...

Looking to raise a few meat ducks just for our own use, the prices online seem silly £5 to £10 per bird (Aylesbury or Aylesbury cross). Is there a more average price ?

    Seaspiracy

Anybody on here watched seaspiracy on Netflix? Doesn’t make good watching but after some of the programmes falsely portraying farming of late i’m at odds as to whether to believe all that was said in the programme. What do others think is it an accurate portrayal of what is happening?

    Fenders on Farrowing huts

Hi everyone, Just curious, does anybody drop the fender before the pig farrows? We always drop it as we check and find them with piglets, however it seems like unecesarily disturbing the pig at a tender moment. I wondered if having the fender down as soon as the sow moves in would be better...
