    BYDV spray

Anyone doing an aphid spray? Agronomist thinks I should on the early stuff (drilled end of Sept), but I think only to cover his arse. I’m not convinced, especially with all this rain, wind and now cold we’re getting. Be hard enough to find a day to even spray it.

    Tine drills and clart

Afternoon all We have a fair lump not sown at the minute, some of it quite heavy and still stubble, some of it worked and half sown. Tine drills seem to be top choice for some people in wet conditions, so I'm after experiences really. I know of a tine drill at sensible money, and we have a 6m...

How much have you planted and how much is lost

about half the wheat area in here , lost probably 10% , after a general low yield harvest looks like another one on the way , surely there must be some rise in prices to come or are we going to get shafted properly to keep the majority happy ?

    RIGHT OR WRONG DRILLS

With this extreme weather bursts we get now, its got me thinking what is the right drill for all weather conditions? We have all been led to believe direct drilling or min till is the best for your ground? but what is best for your income? After all this wet all us direct drill boys are now...

    Sowing rather than drilling?

Do we have a seed drill mindset? Some years ago Clive Bailye arranged a trial of 10 or so different direct drills on a level uniform 50 acre field. There was a spare plot which they seeded with a fertiliser spinner and then scratched over the surface. It performed far better than expected...

To roll or not to roll

Drilled a couple of fields of winter barley on Saturday and wondering wether to get them rolled tomorrow before rain Wednesday or leave till the spring. Ground conditions were reasonable but certainly not perfect for barley with the very odd damp patch. Having a glorious day today and the top...

    Slimers field drilled

My Slimers field got drilled today with RGT Goldfinch (upcoming BYDV and OBM resistant milling wheat) into an accidental clover and trefoil cover crop. Hopefully I’ll get the pre-em done on Sunday, then Clive Blacker can come and lay the Slug traps out. Lots of beetles roaming about which is...

    Does soil movement kill weeds?

Bit of a cock up but it’s created a question. 30ac after potatoes was cultivated straight after harvest 2 weeks ago. I checked it a week ago to see if it needed some more levelling but it was fine to drill straight into. Then it rained and rained. Went over today with tractor, drill, seed etc to...

    Glyphosate in with pre-ems?

It's chuffing windy I want to go drilling. I have some big weeds (groundsel, thistles) but not many grassweeds in the seedbeds yet. From memory you're only allowed 1.5lts of 360 post drilling. Is gly with pre-ems a waste of time? Thanks!

    First time drilling

First time drilling, always used a contractor in the past. Using a Lemken combi drill with electronic metering. The metering wheel is a small rubber wheel and in the current conditions it's picking up a lot of soil which seems to be affecting the speed on the Lemken screen. When I get out and...

    Do we need a drill

After this springs exercise with spring barley that was spun on (undressed hss seed ) . We were getting late last week of March so spun on the seed and a very light cultivate in with a wilrich cultivator and rolled in and it had a pre em . If we had waited any longer it would of been mid April...
