Webinar follow up: the offer for arable and horticulture growers
Written by Becky Briggs
On Thursday 29 February, we held a webinar for arable and field horticulture growers in England.
In the session, we covered the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), Countryside Stewardship (CS), the...
If you've entered into SFI but potentially cant meet aims due to weather difficulties / ground conditions , what options do you have ?
I've entered SFI with a start date of Feb this year and one of the options was no insecticide (IPM4) which is planned for fields coming spring barley. The...
I've always had decent enough inkjet printers, the last two being HP 'all-in-ones'. However, the genuine cartridges are a complete rip off, and the non-genuine ones, when I can get the HP printer to accept them, have always been problematic and in need of regular head cleans, etc. Cartridges are...
Can anyone explain to me how we got to the situation where the tax burden is at the highest level for 70 years but our public services are in such a shocking state?
The NHS is a black hole for money, councils going bust left, right and centre, the judicial system creaking, armed forces now...
Listening to general public interviewed yesterday after the budget, all the younger (well they sounded it) were saying taxes should go up to pay for services etc. one older Irish guy said let people decide what they spend their money on. Made me think the younger generation would rather have...

Heard this said plenty of times, but really if you have a small farm turning over a relatively small amount say £1-200k you are only ever going to be able to make so much money no matter how efficient you are or how well you sell your produce. The only way to increase profits is to increase...
Hi All,
I'm Bronwen and I'm a 4th year undergraduate at the University of St Andrews. I'm currently working on my dissertation and am looking for some participants involved in the English arable agriculture sector to discuss the impacts and ramifications of the post-Brexit agricultural reform...
Anyone successfully applied for SFI where there is an SSSI on the land?
We have had an email asking for a notice and consent for planned activity even though we are not applying on the SSSI itself. It’s a wood in the middle of the farm and no options available.
The helpful NE answer the phone...
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/hedgerow-regulations-to-be-brought-into-law-to-protect-wildlife
Cross compliance ended 31st December. Good job it's been a wet winter. 🤬
So it appears we lose income on let's say half a metre (bit more probably) on the perimeter of every field to stay legal...
What's the info regarding amalgamating existing Mid Tier Agreements into the SFI?
The same options, with the same payment rates now appear in both, but the Stewardship payment is still one lump sum , whereas SFI is 3 monthly, making cashflow managemnet easier.
Anyone any info?
Great planning...
A little project to fit auto rate control and variable rate control to a Stocks FanJet Plus, this has an electric driven metering wheel,
that at present is controlled at a set speed from a VS-2 control box:
So I'm using an RC11 PCB the same as for my Knight Sprayer,
This has a motor...

Hedgerows play an important role in farming. They slow...
We’ve got some permenant pasture we entered into SW9 seasonal livestock removal last spring, we’re now looking closely at putting that same ground into SAM3 herbal lay. Can this be done? The blurb in the press release for SFI seems fairly positive it wouldn’t be a problem, but SW9 isn’t listed...
Whats everyone elses position. The wheats looking really hungry now and its so wet wondering whether just go and make a mess or be patient?! Must be loosing yield surely.
