A potential anaerobic digester just up the road from me had its Planning Committee meeting yesterday. They had already approached me to grow crops for them & take digestate back. I would prefer a break crop if possible. The farm has a significant blackgrass burden. Mostly brashy soils prone to...
Taken on a lump of heavy land it’s been barley after barley after barley and I’m sure is sick of the stuff. It’s also as tight as and needs a good pull up.
OSR I’m not impressed with the returns or the risk any more, And never got control of it till it was too late.
Spring oats?. Nah too much...

Biostimulants are currently being pushed to help facilitate a reduction in fertiliser inputs as well as to offset the impact of pest and disease pressure, but do they actually deliver? CPM learns how two products can unlock tangible...
I'm reluctantly growing second wheats again this autumn.
I test seed and try to avoid fungicidal seed dressings where possible. I was horrified to see the price of latitude but I'm not sure if I should really be using it? It would seem in a no-till situation and very early October drilling its...

A landrace wheat, never grown before in the UK, may provide the route to slug-resistant wheat. CPM visits a specialist farming company taking part in the quest and reports first-year results of the farmer-led trials.
“The trial has opened...
Arable novice here.
What are the benefits of growing triticale in an arable rotation?
Is it a breakcrop with wheat?
How cheap is it to grow, and what yield would you expect from land that would normally do 3.5 tonne per acre wheat?
Presumably combined, and the straw is of use too?
Many thanks
Having a discussion yesterday about the difference between input costs and futures prices and came to the conclusion that this is becoming an issue for all of us.
I shal be going with the same area as I use all my own cereals for my animals.
I've been to zero crop trials this year. And as much as I love gleam I'd like a field of something else to go with it. What are the standout wheats you've got? Lots of love for Dawsum I'm hearing ...

Download PDF Control of take-all currently relies on long-standing cultural methods and one seed treatment, but research is hoping to find new measures to compliment these existing tools. CPM takes a closer look. The goal is to find a sustainable approach to...
I've been approached with a proposition to use one of our fields for a car park over the last weekend of September for a show promoting local businesses as pandemic recovery boost.
I'm not too keen on using the field they are asking for as I'm hoping to DD a 3rd wheat into it and can't see that...
Any continuous wheat growers out there? What breed are you finding is the best for 3rd + wheats?
Run out of options for rotations, osr kaput, linseed seems a no no especially up here on clay, spring crops Ha Ha Ha,this year has shown once again the feutility of them here.😞
walked some very squelchy wheat stubble that had been cultivated and levelled in late September. very even crop of wheat volunteers.
what would it yield (compared to a late sown bean or oat) if
a) BYDV hasn't been an issue?
b) I can take out a proportion of the large blackgrass plants there...
As above, I realise that profitable high yielding spring wheat yields need drought resistant soils (not Cotswold Brash!!). If any of you grow spring wheat as part of your rotation any advice you can give to those considering spring wheat will be much appreciated.
Has anybody tried growing a 3rd wheat and been successful with it in recent times. Only in our 3rd year of growing cereals having ploughed a couple hundred acres of old sheep pastures. Disease has been relatively low and no black grass on the farm. Had 2 years of growing Costello feed wheat and...
Whats not to like?
Harvest, light cultivation whilst planting cover crop, spray off in December/ January, direct drill as soon as conditions are right in the spring. Massive reduction in fixed costs, cash flow is as easy as it gets, no pressure on the sprayer, seasonal labour requirements are...
