They might now! Similar area and I've not seen a Cogent van around but havn't checked with them to find out.

Can see a big increase in number of independent ai techs soon
Lots of possibilities, hope something comes through for everyone. We are the opposite to you and Never see a genus van but I think an independent covers our area for them

AI used to be cheap enough but now time you pay for straws on top of the 75 quid it won't be far off the price of a bull and a bull will last a few years, but it all depends how you are set up as to whats best.

Would think you could buy the bull if it's an extra bull that's needed to main bull and use him for the job and sell back onto market until next year and still be in pocket selling at a loss ...

Buy from clean breeder

£300 for a 3 day course.

https://mastergen.com/services/ai-starter-kit/
~£700 for the hardware.

Not sure about nitrogen cost.
Plus straws.
Plus any injections/FTAI used.

I had looked into it, but for a small number of stock I think getting the tech in is a better option.
Only issue I have is that stabilisers are only available through Cogent who don't operate in my area.

Another poor AI outcome and a bull will be purchased. Not ideal as we only have about 10 cows. The cost including FTAI was in and around £800.

£800pa would fund a decent bull and you'd still hopefully have him to chill at the end of his breeding career so would probably cost less in long run.

£250 a year for nitrogen top up, but Genus were charging me £10 a month for straw storage as well for not very many straws.

What's the difference between AI-ing a horse and a cow? Dairy farmers seem to have a very easy ride of it compared with horse owners. For the latter, we are talking well into four figures. Sorry about that! :)

I'm on £280/yr flask top up from semex. It's only a quarterly top up which is fine for me as I only AI for a few weeks in the spring. Some will be every 2mths, which is better if you are regularly going in the flask.
Also some companies aren't interested in topping up your flask unless you order a lot of semen off them. Cogent didn't want to do mine unless I ordered £1000+ of semen off them! It was a no go, especially as they only stocked one blonde bull that was already related to most of my herd 🙄
