Probably a daft question, but will vetch and clover suffer if cut frequently while flowering ? The black grass is re heading every couple of weeks now, so needs to be cut, but I’m fearful of ending up with no legumes through continuous mowing. If anyone jas any experience of growing this stuff, advice would be appreciated! It’s all new to me and advice on the subject is scarce !!

I wouldn’t worry to much about the black grass heading. Let your clover bulk up and flower up nice. Black grass likes wet muddy ground the clover and vetch will improve your soil and in turn you’ll lower the black grass

black grass takes 2 or more weeks after heading to have viable seeds

cutting too early give it chance to produce more heads
cutting once it is fertilised but not matured reduces the regrowth

to check the seed viability squieze the seed between thumb nail and finger if it has filled it could be viable

i have cut black grass in may in osr then sprayed off in july and not shed any viable seeds
also cut some in wheat in may then again in early august and had very little in the following crop
all no tilled

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
