Hi all, anyone on here had much experience of vw amaroks? Local man I know is thinking of selling his 2015 2 litre auto one, very tidy never been used for towing. I currently have a 2017 dmax auto 1.9 litre. Done about same mileage. Would it be an upgrade? I know the inside is better for sure! I don’t do vast amounts of towing most is the cattle trailer with 4-5 heifers/young bulls in and not often at all at that

I've got one, and a 2.5 D-Max (I test drove the 1.9 and couldn't get on with it which is why I bought a 2nd hand VW instead). Amarok much nicer on long journeys, really comfortable, cruises at 80 as well as a car in my view, very stable towing. Auto box is the best bit. Had a few engine management/DPF/EGR issues but mainly solved by not putting cheap supermarket fuel in it.

I prefer the D-Max around the farm and the lanes though, it feels more nimble. Amarok is a cumbersome thing.

D Max slightly better on mpg but very little in it, 28 and 26 respectively.

On third one, all good but this one with the V6 is exceptional. 2L pretty good though.

Had ours eight years
Mainly local driving so drinks like Oliver Reed

Well worth lining out the load bay but whole body takes a ding well.
Handbrake not engaging properly caused an MOT failure but apart from that, good to go. Tows fine

What kind of tow bars you guys had on them? This one hasn’t one fitted, any idea what sort of ‘s’ weight rating you should go for? (Whatever that is)

Not sure, mine's factory fitted. Something to be aware of, the trucks have different towing capacity. As I recall, the 2 litre Highline which is permanent 4wd is 3.2t but I think other specs are less, certainly none of them are 3.5t, though that may have changed when they became V6, I don't know. I reckon this is why they were never all that popular as farm trucks when they were first around.

I think this one is an ultimate edition?

Our 2014 amarok 2L has been flawless with 230k kms on it, it has 8 speed auto but i do feel like 1st gear should've had higher gearing as it is your 'low range' but still goes a bit too fast in it, replaced Merc ml280 which had loads of issues. We use it primarily for towing cattletrailer, with normalish street tires on it consumption was quite a lot lower than the merc, but since putting offroad bridgestones it, it is only marginally better and the noise is a lot worse too, as expected. Tows really well, and has locking rear diff, havent gotten stuck yet but getting cockier with it all time :ROFLMAO:

Bought a 100k mile 2012 one with basic manual 4wd, had to put grabber off-road tyres on it to help it pull itself along on grass let alone mud. But other than that it got to 150k miles with only an egr valve failure and general maintenance. Then some travelling entrepreneurs relieved me of it.

Now got a 2016 with automatic 4wd and the computer seems to sort it all out fine for the bit of driving round fields it does, so it’s still on road tyres. Bought at 50k miles, now got 80k miles on it and have had the water pump belt snap.

Lovely to drive, can’t fault it.

Have v6 and love it. Great fun to drive, even on supplied road tyres would go places I wouldn't expect. Comfy, only bugbear I can think of is inadequate reversing light and on 2nd dpf. May at some point remap it if it would improve mpg without loosing get up and go.

How reliable are they and do they cost a lot to keep on the road? Basic maintenance is fine but I'm not keen on the idea constantly chucking money at an expensive motor once purchased

Bought my 2L auto one 18 months ago with 40K on the clock and touch wood it has been faultless, auto box takes a little getting used when towing though, but that’s probably the same on all autos. Great vehicle, get it bought also not making them any more, making them more sought after.
