Anyone got cover with RAC?

I have just received an unbelievable quote from an RAC guy outside Tesco in Welshpool . for
£11.? I can't remember how much pence per month I am fully covered for any breakdown in any vehicle i am in I asked does that include when I am helping my cousin move sheep in his pickup the reply was yes . If the vehicle cannot be fixed at roadside then it will be recovered and delivered to anywhere I want

From experience with similiar people, they just want there signing on commission!

If true, that is cheap.... Very cheap.

That cover would be £7.50 a month if you bought it online at the moment. Something not adding up here, £11 wouldn't cover the fellas time to stand there whilst you sign the paperwork.. It has been a few years since that last one, how much is a none member call out these days? I work on the basis I need roadside assistance once in every 7 years...

If the vehicle cannot be fixed at roadside then it will be recovered I asked does that mean taking it to nearest garage as I don't trust local garages never mind complete strangers, his reply was no it will be taken anywhere I want

Check it isn't cheaper again for a lump sum?

I did have that sort of individual cover with RAC some years ago, when driving different cars, and not really knowing which would be available when. It was useful on three occasions for me, solo, and saved an awful lot of faff when a van I was a passenger in broke down over an hour away from base. There were sheep aboard, and it was towed home.

I have that cover (with the RAC) as a bolt on to my farm vehicle insurance cover, at a cost of £65/yr. Unfortunately it doesn't cover recovery of any livestock that might be in the trailer, but I don't think any of them do.

£11 a month sounds well out IMO.

We had full RAC cover including getting you and your vehicle to a destination of your choice.

My son broke down 25 miles from home a few weeks ago with a clutch problem on a Nissan. Rang RAC at 15.00, at 16.00 they said they wouldn't attend as it was a problem that couldn't be fixed at roadside? but would send a Recovery. At 19.00 the Recovery firm rang to say they would be with him within 3 hours, but he would have to make his own way home as they would not let him ride in their vehicle due to covid. So I had a 50 mile round trip to pick him up while his vehicle was recovered to a garage 3 miles from home. Next day the garage repaired the leaking clutch fluid pipe, topped up the reservoir and told us to pick up the car!

As soon as we had done this, I switched to Green Flag-same cover 25% cheaper

Edited to add. The breakdown wasn't in the middle of nowhere, it was in the middle of Plymouth

Anyone ever called out breakdown services , I haven't , but I've got a rope in the boot
Many times probably would have been better saving the money over the years but who does that. Only been a handful of times they got me going again. Recovery without them ain’t cheap however and you only get so many inclusive call outs

Four times that I recall in 23 years...

First one was the AA taking family down to Cornwall, parents had cover through their bank account. I lost power in my Astra going up the hill past Exeter race course. The "technician" insisted it was down to dirty plugs & rotor arm which I had to replace or future cover would be void, despite the problem being obviously fuel starvation - turned out to be a worn fuel pump drive shaft.

Next one was auxiliary drive belt went on my Galaxy 2.3 on a Sunday whilst on holiday again in Cornwall. RAC towed me at breakneck speed with a rigid bar to one of their recommended garages who stung me for the repair!

Third time, I lost a tyre on a very busy dual carriageway & the spare was damaged in the process (stupid idea hanging a spare under the car without protection). The AA recovered us to a "safe location" (after 2 hours - despite having a vulnerable passenger) & then arranged for a mobile tyre fitter to come from 60 miles away at our expense, despite there being plenty closer & cheaper ones available.

Fourth time a CV joint collapsed on my Fiesta in the middle of Cambridge - the RAC took my word for it & arranged recovery without sending a technician out.
