Beef Cattle feed ration

Looking at doing a 16% and 18%mix myself this winter as the concentrate in buying guide in just seem to be just belly fill..Have rolled barley available what can I add to that to produce a higher protein? I've come across high pro soya and also a 33% protein nut which seems a good idea..Do any of you make a ration yourself what do you use?

What age are you feeding it to? Finishers or weanlings? You could use urea carefully. Personally I’m going away from it as it doesn’t sit that comfortably with me and I have red clover silage I’m using now. Also have beans available to use as well.

Soya here.
Off the top of my head, for a 1/2t mix of rolled barley, add 45kg soya and 12.5kg minerals.
Use the pearsons square calculator to calculate amounts needed.

It's for weanlings also for suckler cows that I want to keep in condition

Forget the urea then.
Our sucklers just get silage and either limited quality or quantity at that and keep in old enough condition. Not enough money in them to be putting anything else into them for us anyway.
Beans if you can get them close enough to you might be a good option. Get your forage analysed first to see if anything is actually needed.
I made the mistake last winter of doing the weanlings too well in the winter and they got a bit soft and stalled when they went out to grass.

Barley and Peas is what I used to feed. Protein level used vary year on year depending on the levels in each, so would always send samples off for testing to work out the mix. Last lot I think worked out a 70/30 barley/peas, but saying that I think we’ve done it at about 50/50 (could have that wrong). Add a bit of molasses when mixing. I grow both so have it to hand. Cattle did well on it.

Have you taken any land out of production from last autumn?
