Blood Donating....

Having failed to donate last year, I thought it was time to make enquiries. The website offered a session on 17th of next month so I rang the helpline to check timings. 'You can have any time from 1.00 to 7.00' was the reply so I've booked us both for 1.10 and 1.20.
She asked about vaccination and I had my 2nd on 21/3. You have to wait 7 days after the jab apparently.
The reason I failed last year was that the only session nearby was fully booked so a bit of a change there.
That's another one done. Very smooth, the only difference was we had to put fresh masks on and put our old ones in the bin. Steady throughput in the time we were there but fewer chairs 'cos of the 2m rule.
Club biccies for after, yes!!

And another one. The Porthmadog venue is unavailable due to storm damage to the roof of the centre
Had to go to Caernarfon to Celtic Royal Hotel, very posh.
I was puzzled as to why they only had 2 chairs operating and on making enquiries learned that it was shortage of staff.
I don't understand this seemingly widespread shortage of workers in all sorts of industries.
It seems they will be back to Port next time.

I suspect it is for the same reasons that many industries can't find folk. How many people can afford to drive 20 miles to work for a 12 hour shift and be paid £9.50/hr or whatever the national minimum wage is? The answer of course is students/young people just out of school or people who are semi-retired who want to keep their hand in.

Just bumping this......

Because of this........

Strange irony is that on Tuesday this week I had an appointment booked at 2.30pm.
8.45 am I get a text saying "See you later, make sure you eat & drink etc".
2 hours before the appointment I got a text saying "due to staff shortages we need to cancel your appointment".

I thought "fudge it" - deleted the "cancelled" text and turned up at the allotted time.
8 members of staff standing around, no donors.
Went to book in at reception lady says "Didn`t you get a cancellation text?" I fibbed and showed her the 8.45am text. :)

Donation done, so somebody might get lucky if they need any B+ (y)

That's a great effort but 100% ridiculous that you needed to con the system to donate blood.

We are lucky its a permanent donor centre.
Friend of mine in Guilford was on his way to the local sports centre when the text arrived, and the wagon carrying the mobile kit passed him going the other way.

At work we have to wear masks in corridors/public areas - at the donor centre the receptionist said I could "take it off, its OK"......... wonder why they are short of staff?

Probably too many of them knocking in 5 day C-19 "holidays" as its half term round here next week.

They need to see your lips when donating apparently , so they can see if there is a change in the colour

Could have understood that "in the chair" but there we are.

I`m wondering if the apparent lack of "the blood bus" is impacting on collections ?
Don`t see as many parked up at major employers as you used to nor do you see many adverts for same.
The joy of outsourcing services............

When I went a month ago I still had to wear a face covering but apparently that's lifted now

We are truly grateful to everyone who does donate, so thanks to all on here that do. Our baby girl was diagnosed with cancer last year at birth and subsequently had 4 blood transfusions during her for 6 months of live while undergoing chemotherapy. So thank you everyone.

I would love to be able to donate but cannot as I previously had cancer and radiotherapy treatment for it.

I'm donating tomorrow and will think about this while I sit there.

I made the decision to stop donating the last time I went. Hadn't been for a fair while because of the covid restrictions and now they apparently sign out everyone who hadn't been to the last 4 invitations, if I got them anyway because that has been kind of a problem aswell. Years ago you got an invitation for an evening and went or not, now I have to make an appointment, selected a timeslot and give out just about every possible way they can contact you short from smokesignals.
I enjoyed doing it but they make a good bif of money (monopolized company, especially the company head is doing well) and work with alot of volunteers. Goodbye it is.

Another one done in Porthmadog again. Three chairs operating this time. Still shortage of staff. Of the 12 head team, 6 are off on leave or isolating, including one that has had a new hip. My attendant was saying that 5 new staff are being taken on next month but will need training before they can be released onto the shop floor.
I was working on the tablet answering all my questions and a lady who had finished, was having her tea and biscuits when she fainted. Luckily she only slumped down in her chair before the tea lady reacted and caught hold of her. Then there was a very smooth operation by 4 staff lifting her into the recuperation chair and attending to her wants. I was getting my tea and biscuits before they would let her leave.
I understand the uk's oldest donor is 85 so I hope I have another 10 years in me. Cross fingers.

Doing some tidying up at home and found the old Blood Donor card & 50th Gold donor badge which has given me the required kick up the blunt end to get back "in the chair".

On the bright side I`ll lose 1lb in weight every 3 months. :):)

The regular donor can save 3 lives per donation and we always run short at Christmas.

I`m a B+ as well. :D
I don't think donating blood can lose weight, i'm anemic with low blood pressure but my fats are still with me.
