When did bullocks become steers? I grew up calling them bullocks. Not sure when or what happened but everyone round here now calls them by the American name, “steers”. How did that happen?

Alway makes me smile when speaking with mate from us north, they would call themselves beasts. We would term beef cattle bullocks both male or female, as we are dairy we call the youngstock - heifers.Nope a bullock is a castrated male in my opinion never heard of a female being called it.
