Entirely agree, the most simple way to eradicate BVD is to ban any animal being sold without a BVD free ticket. We were unvaccinated because for over 30 years we have sold pedigree cattle all over the world, most countries would not accept any animal vaccinated for anything even years ago S19.we were one of the first herds to become brucellosis free in the north of England, we kept our disease free status by keeping our herd closed no animal bought in for over20years.

I was asked to go (as a dairy farmer) to a meeting about BVD. There were a load of different people there vets, market representatives, APHA and DEFRA. I had to speak and I said it was really easy to wipe out BVD in 10 months if you wanted to. Tag and test everything, kill PIs and maybe make it mandatory to vaccinate. Then you don't get a passport for a new born calf until it has a negative tissue sample. Then BVD would be effectively done in this country in under a year.

They didn't like that one bit all sorts of moaning. We won't because we lack conviction.

Now i realise its not like you could go out tomorrow and do it. That said give it a year or two so they could put an extra box on the passport and testing capacity was expanded why not?

One of the reasons l came on the dairy site was to find if anybody on here knew of any cattle dying of BVD up to now l have only heard of the odd cow dying, non on the scale we had, yes l will agree it would be more deadly with us being an unvaccinated herd and a closed herd for over 20years but after being told by experts from all over the British isles BVD will not kill your cows, why???
I know PIs often don’t thrive and eventually go and die, but never heard of a situation like yours, wether it was due to the never having any exposure or just an aggressive strain. Fit healthy cattle dieing like that, can’t imagine how horrendous must have been.

Yes that is one reason why l posted the message, as up to now l cannot find anyone that has lost the amount of cattle l did due to BVD, Min Of Ag. help would have been of help but at the time l was told unless its F+M they could not help as most staff were on leave after F+M personally l feel there was some other disease as well because even later on heifers 12/ 18 months vaccinated and clear of BVD would drop dead without any sign of illness.

Possible wasn’t BVD that caused it, and that was the only thing picked up on tests.

BVD was confirmed by Prof. Joe Brownlie top man on BVD but he did say plus some other disease, also confirmed by Min of ag vet, l did not know what it was after being told BVD will not kill your cows, l let nothing over four years leave the farm alive every thing was slaughtered and incinerated, it broke my heart to have a pen of 4/6 month old bull calves put away in this way but yes l am sure there was something else in there as well but with cattle market bought cattle that broke in you cannot expect anything else.
