Evidence of infection in mid October drilled WB, don’t want secondary infection but guess given temperatures and low aphid forecast not worthwhile/not not good for environment. Conflicting advice from agronomists. Not treated in the autumn if that makes a difference. Anecdotally I find hybrids seem less affected than the malting varieties we grew years ago. ie visible infection doesn’t lead to as significant a yield loss

Infection might have occurred prior to mid-February but spraying for aphids now is futile and/or not required for most situations. I would work on the principle that the cold spell in mid-February was sufficiently lethal for most aphids in most parts of the UK.

Barley crops won't take long now to reach GS31 at which point any new/late infection will be tolerable.

Would be interesting to know what info the agronomist who is more pro-spraying insecticide has based his opinion on?

Temps from RAF Marham... quite a few frosts to do the bird-cherry oat aphids and then some real bangers in early-mid February to sort out grain aphid.

I have what looks like quite bad BYDV in one particular field of barley drilled 29th September, there's a distinct like where the rest of the field was drilled a fortnight later.
It had a autumn BYDV spray but not until mid November. The damage is done, I won't be spraying it again as said above it'll soon be past the worst infection stage and the cold should have done for any aphids still lurking in the crop.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
