What do vets charge , would need a fair few to do to offset the call out charge would have thought, I use a portable Ritchie gas iron , runs on lighter fuel , its not to big a job if you can get someone to help you .

Crates are too slow IMO, you'll buy an iron an hour and get local anesthetic for a few quid from the vet
Debated this earlier this afternoon. We use a home made crate (looks like a man basket 🤫) with the front having four locking yokes. Put four in, lock them up, Jab, line up the next four while there "cooking", then de-horn the four. Release and repeat.
Two man job tho and with ultimately only two us here, trying to speed the process up.

Borrowed a crate from a neighbour but it took just too long, although only one man job. V laborious.
We still use an electric iron but have come to the conclusion gas might speed it up.

Haven’t used them myself, but vet technician do them from our practice. vet and tech come out, give them a couple of hurdles and point to the calves. About £5 a calf, that includes a shot of metacam. Calves are knocked out and it’s all very stress free. If you dairy, they check the teats for you as well.
looking at horns on some stirks here, I should have used this service last year 😳

Bought a Bateman crate this time and think it’s great, don’t like paste when I tried it. He’s got 6 week old calves to do, try holding them and dehorning at the same time, no thanks

If you’re lucky your vet may have students who do it FOC under supervision as part of their training. I have classes out sometimes for disbudding and castrations.

As they calve we individually pen the cows if they suck we then load them in to a quad trailer de horn with the paste tag and record details.we then drive slowly out to field with the cows following

You fancy a job holding 200 beef calves this week? The oldest are a month old but I’m fairly sure you’d throw the towel in after half a dozen
Used to work at spot rearing 1600 calves a year, 2 of us (1 holding 1 jabbing/disbudding)no crate but 2 irons to alternate with so always good and hot. could Easily do around 40 per hour
