De-horning yearling bull

I’ve kept family favourite entire and never got around to dehorning him. I’m wondering the best way to go about getting the horns off him without negative affect to his temperament?

They’ll be nearly 2” dia at the base, will probably take in the vet, considering having him knocked out?

I’ve already had my ear chewed about how he should have been done as a calve, totally get that.

Yes to be kept for breeding.

Wear very old clothes that you don't mind throwing away and douse them with Lynx or other smelly that isn't normally in his environment.

Let the vet do it. Someone lost the FA after admitting he dehorned a beast that was above the age they stipulate the farmer can do it at. I think it’s vet only after 12 months of age.

+a jab of metacam and loop a piece of baler twine under both horns like a headband and pull up tight , then pull top and bottom strand together in the centre of the head with a cable tie. Acts as a tourniquet on the blood vessels supplying the horns, cut string off in 4-7 days. Halter him tight to the right of the crush when cutting the left horn off and vice versa

Over 5 months should be a vet for FA standards

Don't bother with baler twine , use good elastic bands and take them off after 24 hours Easier than tying. A friend does this when he misses a couple of calves occasionally . It's how he saw the vet do it
