Did an interview on BBC Breakfast this morning pushing for egg price rises.

View attachment 1031414From the Ranger mag. The current campaign by BFREPA will get us nothing I fear. I think this will have to play out with the predicted egg shortage happening and a lot of damaged producers left in its wake.☹
Agree, I think BFREPA have campaigned about as well as they can, they got a fair number of producers onto the media last week, but the retailers don’t care how many businesses they bankrupt in their battle for market share.

Alright just checked out Tesco prices and eggs go from 8p each to 42p each but id say 24p is about middle of the road. So my question is how much of that does the farmer get and how much do they need to make the sums add up?

Problem being that the packers are scared of the supermarkets and none of the supermarkets want to be the one to put prices up first. It will be too late by the time they are short of eggs. I wouldn't be surprised if a packer or 2 go under in the upcoming storm.

Packers going bust is what’s likely to finish producers off, more than the low egg price, unfortunately. Back in the 90’s we had 2 packers go bust on us in less than 5 years

It costs £55 a bird to build a 64000 free range unit plus air scrubbers, twice as much as did 10 years ago ,with the same egg price, My egg packer says it does not pay to build at this time but some packers and feed companies are doing there best to persuade new farmers to build
Is it really a business venture that is worth the risk at those start up prices?

We built a 16000 unit a year ago for around £35/bird space, can't see anything else in farming with a better payback tbh. Prices have gone up considerably since though, was told it would cost a 1/3 more now so closer to £50.

It isn’t paying back though with egg prices around 95p/doz and feed around £400/t. It’s just burning through your capital!

Hmmmmm. I just wonder if in 10 years time you will have a shed with knackered internals and an investment decision. In my limited experience you get a cycle of one excellent flock/ one mediocre flock/ one terrible flock. The terrible one knocks the stuffing out of you with mortality and vet intervention. Problem is I think the packers base all there costings on the good flock and will happily tell you that no one else is having a problem when you have that bad flock. It is only talking to your fellow producers that brings out the truth. Sorry if that comes across as negative. I have had some good times an egg producer but I can see a lot of hardship on the horizon with unknown financials regarding pullet price and that hungry period up to week 24.😐

Spoke to a fair few producers locally before we started, most of them were positive and said that the figures quoted by the packer were realistic with build costs and income.

I understood that eggs were losing money due to a supply only contract.
