… because a very large proportion of the cost of food on the supermarket shelves is sprays/vaccines for diseases that were not going to be a problem??

What planet are these people on?

If I decide to, say, vaccinate my flock against enzootic abortion, that’s fairly expensive at over £3 per animal but I’m doing it as an insurance policy against things going badly wrong at lambing time in maybe a few years time. Even if disease is indicated by their detectors, it’s probably too late to do anything because animals should be vaccinated at least a month before tupping.

Also, as we’re constantly being told, we have to compete on a world stage and our prices depend on world prices/imports so this will make no difference to consumer prices at all.

I wonder whether the ‘price’ aspect was spun up in order to make it more relevant to consumers (of dubious BBC content).

It’s just prime BBC clickbait. You’d think they had plenty of news at the moment without dredging this nonsense up. Amazing they’ve managed to fit it in with all the election coverage they’re battering us with.

Lower the cost of food? That’s just embarrassing all round.

Also, just a couple of PhD chancers desperately trying to find something worthwhile to do with their lives and failing….

We have far too many people in the country with too little to do dreaming up sh*t like this
Oat/Cow milk - WTF
DNA testing the air - WTF
Oh but its innovative .....................its not, its sh*t, go and get a real job doing something useful with your art/history & media studies degrees you planks
I’m not so sure that being scathing about the art side of things. I know a couple of ‘artists’ who keep a LOT of other trades very busy creating large pieces and that includes your trade; welding.
Good ‘art’ is a joy to see, touch, experience and is a sign of culture, irrespective of any politics surrounding it.

I’m looking forward to new member “dna air test guy” coming on with a farmer consultation for his new business venture
One of the best things about my past job was being able to entertain such matters as this.
No not the argument or confrontation, just the dialogue.
Both parties had something to discuss and learn from the ensuing conversation.

got someone to pay for the research and equipment though..

Gov.uk were persuaded to let Warwick university loose with PCR (DNA) testing of badger latrines, in order to conduct a more targeted cull of +ve groups.
Prof. Liz wellington and her team trousered £734K for that. It worked, but then her researchers said they didn't want this very yoosful test used to cull badgers. Of course they didn't. FFS
