Dodgy beetle grain rejection

Just had a load of malting barley rejected for a Cadelle beetle. They’ve sent a supposed image (presumably under microscope) of the said offender. Only one was found and three loads had already gone in from that store. I think it’s all bu@@@@it, as I’ve looked up this beetle and it wouldn’t need a microscope to see it and besides the picture doesn’t even look like it’s in barley. The load has returned and I can’t see anything in it, but even if I could it doesn’t sound as if this beetle is a real grain store pest anyway in which case how do you stop a few insects getting in to your heaps in a grain store. What am I supposed to do, and how much does it cost to fumigate a relatively small heap if necessary.

Ask for the beetle. If they can't give you it kick up stink.

Check what the hauliers last few loads were. We had a load rejected. Some kind of wood beetle. Previous load was a wood product.

That’s what I thought. If that is very magnified barley dust then the beetle is tiny! But the species they say it is is about 10mm long or more!!

Grain beetles are big enough to see with the naked eye easily. If they were in the load they would be crawling up the sides of the wagon whilst it was loaded and even a monkey would spot it.

Grain beetles are big enough to see with the naked eye easily. If they were in the load they would be crawling up the sides of the wagon whilst it was loaded and even a monkey would spot it.

They only found one apparently! I can’t see any in heap now it’s come back!

I told the lorry to do a 45 min loop and go back after I spoke to them.

Never heard anything from the mill when he tipped again…..turns out they had a traffic jam of lorries tipping so turned some away.

Well that’s interesting. I had a lorry coming to collect some beans after he had tipped at the same place. He rang twice to say he would be late as he couldn’t weigh out as they had a software issue and the weighbridge had gone down leaving a bit of a queue. My load of barley was probably in that queue.

I believe they are renowned for turning loads away. They can’t allow too many lorries to queue as they end up on the road and police get upset.

I’ve never been there as it’s a long way from Devon so no idea of the layout. .

But as said above if they can’t supply the beetle in a sample then ask questions.

I had a sample of my rape and I know damn well it was fine.

Looks like a variety of grain/flour beetle. Can’t give a firm answer in which type since it’s missing bits.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen a type come in with stored grain that was close to 10mm. Half that, maybe.

And yes, while you can kind of see them with the naked eye, that doesn’t mean you can see them in the grain. I can’t imagine how bad the infestation would have to be to see them climbing up the side of a truck

You need a hand sieve or screen to shake barley in and then check the dust that falls through for bugs. That’s what’s in the photos with the beetle. You can see the bottom part of a barley hull right above the beetle.

Do you guys have grain vacuums over there? That’s the most common method of removing insects here. Not the kind that clean out bins though… Like an aspiration on augers.

If the bit I think you mean is part of a barley hull then this beetle is huge!
