The reason i ask is I'm looking for a pre enjoyed tractor to take on a few tasks, headge cutting, rolling and a wee bit of hauling with 16 grain trailer ( private roads) no draft work.
This tractor would probably have north of 6000/7000+hr, good or very bad idea, or should I look else where ? Power quad ?

I use a chap for Massey work, who says that big 64 series tractors, with 50k trans, are starting to show gearbox problems in third gear, as the hours are mounting. in fact he has rebuilt a couple himself lately as I understand.
Can you talk to anyone with real experience of fixing them?

Ul pay alot more for a powerquad so for an economy tractor the massey would be ok

Not round here, here tractors only come in green flavour, with red or yellow wheels.

Maybe, but there seems to be quite a number of power quads with big hours, and for us it's know quantity as we had PQ many years ago.
How about jd power with D6 - Claas , seem to be cheaper.
It's just going to be a back up machine to the two main machines

i really like dyna 6 now took a bit of getting used to but is works super nice with auto drive and speed matching, you just push the 't' bar forward to go through all the gears no clutch required and it matched gears/speed perfectly so you continue smoothly, even works well with very heavy loads.

the p quad is also a good box not used auto quad but i expect its also good.

as people say with these hours you pay and take a chance, even p quad is known to have issues at high hours.

i like john deers but you get much more for your money with mf (second hand no idea new) plus they seem much more manoeuvrable due to no chassis rails.

We have gone away from the dyna 6 gearbox either in Massey or Claas. they have cost us around £12k in repairs on 3 tractors over the last 4 years, only done around 4-5000 hours. Have a friend who runs Massey's and he has gone over to dyna vt's for the same reason, he buys second hand and keeps them to 10,000 hrs plus.

Sounds like you might need to go away from the operator if you have chewed up 3 at low hours. We have a 6499 on 11khrs and touch wood on. Yes we know it’s an issue but try and be sensible. What man makes, man brakes!

MF6499 and do far it’s ok, aware of the 3 gear issues so try to spread the gear usage, heavy draft& p harrow in 2 and drilling and short discs in 3 ?

Every Dyna 6 Massey we used to have where I worked had clutch & gearbox issues, however at that many hours there is always an element of risk no matter what the brand. May be better to hire one in your busy periods instead?

I'd have thought that any make of tractor that you'd be looking at for those tasks at those hrs would have an element of risk. Stick to a 40k model if it'll make you feel better. I have a pre loved 6480 now on 6500hrs ish it's not perfect but I wasn't expecting it to be.

The bit between the steering wheel and the seat has the most effect on dyna6 gearbox. The 40k box has been more reliable for us.

after reading the above i have to agree, if your a tosser its easy to abuse the box (sharp shifts on t bar when its not ready between main 4 gears) , cos i own it and like it use it with care and its been spot on so far, makes you wonder when you see the difference in hours and problems people have had...
